i paused this series about 2 years ago because i was live laugh loving and i needed a break from the world building. i knew that if i were to pick this back up again i needed to be locked in and give this my full attention.

tandem read (empire of storms and tower of dawn) 5/5 ✨
I had to watch a lot of TT’s and go through Reddit to pick back up where i left off because it had been 2 years since I started the tandem read — I’ve concluded that I enjoyed reading both but I don’t think it’s necessary. I often found myself immersed in one story line that I would forget to pause and go back to the other tabbed book and that caused an operational back log from a reading experience since I wanted to stick to the guide. take the guide with a grain of salt, because reading a couple of chapters ahead won’t ruin what’s about to unfold in the other book. I didn’t think I would enjoy chaols redemption arc, and was still rooting for him and aelin despite loving rowan — but his story line was so well written and had finally felt closure for his and aelins story, now embracing his new chapter. so much happened in EOS, but what I enjoyed most was getting to know the cadre and seeing how dorian/manon’s storyline intersects with aelin.

kingdom of ash 10/5 ✨
I am so unwell after reading this. one thing is clear, aelin loves her people, loves her kingdom and is loyal to a fault. she is the strongest FMC I’ve read of in all the fantasy books I’ve indulged in (thus far). the plot twists, seeing how all story lines connect .. it felt like reading JK Rowling HP for the first time. I couldn’t believe how smart and carefully crafted this story was written, the seeds that lay from the first book. No stone unturned, no potholes, no cliff hangers — all themes/ story lines neatly tied up. It was perfection. The minute I finished reading I felt an immense ache in my chest because I had grown so attached to this characters and feel extremely empty without knowing what is happening in Erilea. I also enjoyed the little cross over moment between Aelin and the other worlds — that really got me on my feet!!! a beautiful ending for an amazing story. I truly don’t think anything could top this. by @mjaesreading

in 1975, barbara van laar has gone missing from the same summer camp her older brother 14 years ago also disappeared from — her parents own the summer camp.

wow this book had me from the jump, i was thoroughly invested! told in past and present timelines told from multiple POV’s. this is definitely a slower burn and detailed story writing. the novel has underlying themes of classism, folklore, dysfunctional families + power dynamics and self discovery as women in the 70s. by @mjaesreading

2/50 - 🚀🚀🚀🚀

I didn’t hit my goal of 50 books last year (wrapped the year at 32) but it was never about quantity more so quality.. and having a high book goal kept me accountable to continuously reading instead of doom scrolling!

Second read of the year was by TJR. i have loved every single book of hers, and i obviously bawled in the last hundred or so pages — but this didn’t quite hit the 5 star mark for me. to be fair the book cover says “a love story” and it was exactly that.. it just didn’t go to new heights for me like her other books. It otherwise is still a fantastic read — found family, lgbtq friendly, identity, societal pressure as a woman in the early 80s and trying to find a place in a male dominated industry. a great first read for the year! by @mjaesreading

my friends by fredrik backman

this is my favourite read of 2025 (so far). the story follows four friends and how they navigate their lives through art, friendship, true love and a sense of belonging. told between past and present timelines, backman does an amazing job at making you feel experiences that haven’t happened directly to you in an enjoyable way

i ate this up and had to slow down the last couple of chapters because i didn’t want it to end. everytime i thought i knew what was going to happen, backman consistently surprised me with the direction of the story.

this is my second backman novel and not the last. he has easily become one of my favourite authors with how effortlessly beautiful, gut-wrenching, funny, witty and charming his story telling can be.

new year new goals 🍾

lifed a little too hard last year (got a new puppy, lots of experiences, met someone extremely special) and only read 27 books, but it’s not about the quantity - i genuinely enjoyed a lot of the new series i’ve started!

this year, i’m aiming for 50 which is roughly 4 books a month — totally doable. i want to avoid doom scrolling and letting my brain rot from the internet. pls send some recco’s that you’ve enjoyed from your reads so i can add them to my TBR! by @mjaesreading

fall = romantasy season. throne of the fallen x caraval is the best way to describe the vibe of this book.

although this was really graphic and gory (very out of my comfort zone) it was high stakes and had a couple of plot twists that i didn’t see coming which made it even more enjoyable. i enjoyed the different challenges and character development - the only thing that had me for a loop was the insta-love connection but anything can happen in 7 days lol.

phantasma is the first of the wicked games series, and its sequel is set to release in next year - will be following the series! super easy to read, mindless and enjoyable (just what I needed during this month) by @mjaesreading

lizbet keaton is ready for a new change in her life following an ugly breakup with her long time boyfriend. xavier darling, a london billionaire, purchases the rundown hotel nantucket in hopes to restore a once historic piece of history. along the way we meet the employees of the hotel, and grace hadley - a ghost who perished in the hotels fire in 1922.

what i enjoyed most about this book is the story telling. it was extremely easy to read and thoroughly entertaining. the plot twists kept me interested (it felt like reading a gossip column). i enjoyed that the story was told from multiple POV’s from the employees and ghost of hotel nantucket. you see the character development of each person, which ties up nicely at the end. the perfect summer beach read that has me wanting to visit nantucket with my partner in the summer and follow lizbet’s blue book guide!

overall perfect for the summer, loved the authors writing style and would definitely recommend for something light and easy. will be reading more of hilderbrands books! taken in Lower East Side Manhattan by @mjaesreading

what a beautiful way to end this series! the story follows the final brother — cal and lana. a second chance, forced proximity love story that cuts deep (check for triggers). in order to complete cal’s task to receive his inheritance, he must sell his grandfathers lake house before the summer ends. the only catch is that his ex-girlfriend alana’s name is on the deed. 🥸

i paused on reading this series last year, but asher’s writing is so easy to follow that it was mindless getting back into it. the book made me laugh, swoon and blush (there are some extremely spicy scenes that i was not mentally ready for?!) i really had to pause reading this on public transit because it was a LOT lol.

there are a couple of loose ends that i wished were discussed — lana’s sister and the kanes’ father. but otherwise really happy with how asher wrapped up this series. cal’s story was probably my favourite amongst the 3 brothers. i will definitely be reading more of her books! 🫶🏼✨ by @mjaesreading
