A gorgeous fall Saturday in Montréal… 🥰

I’m getting excited for Louise Penny’s upcoming release later this month; Miss Wilcott’s Ghost, book 21 of the Inspector Gamache / Three Pines series), is pre-ordered and expected on October 26.

In the meantime, I’m making great progress - just finished A World of Curiosities, book 18 and another wonderful mystery!

This one references The Partson’s Treasure, a real life British family painting commissioned in the early 1660s and depicting their cabinet of treasures. A collection of objets, turned historical record.

Love learning about something new (to me), past or present, but what I appreciate the most about Louise Penny’s writing is her characters. No one captures friendships and family dynamics quite the same, her words resonate and always give me pause.

“You’re lying on your deathbed. You have one hour to live. Who is it, exactly, you have needed all these years to forgive?”

Thoughtful, endearing, and absolutely brilliant.

What is your most anticipated release this month? Or, what are you up to today?

As I prepare to say goodbye to September, I’m enjoying some extra time out with Lady Orchid before she goes back into the pursery…

Since discovering @portlandleather earlier this year, I’ve come to realize; each bag and accessory added to my collection fits a specific mood, and season!

Pictured here is my late summer/early fall bag of choice, the medium Koala in rich and pebbly Orchid colour. Love its magnetic closure, everything well-secured inside yet easily accessible, unique design and, of course, real quality leather.

Dressed to match, with all the flair:

🧚‍♀️: Dragonfly tassel in Cattleya
🧚‍♂️: Dragonfly tassel in Wild Rose
🧚: Dragonfly tassel in Canary
🎓: Jumbo multi tassel in Orchid & Canary
🌮: Taco keychain in Orchid
🐦‍⬛: Mockingbird pouch in Orchid
🩷: Heart pouch in Orchid
🔴: Gordita pouch in Orchid
🌺: Petunia pouch in Orchid
🌸: Snap flower in Reba Red
🌼: Snap flower in Rhubarb

Looks so pretty and perfect to me. I’m a little sad to let her go, but excited for a new month and vibe - stay tuned!

Fall is falling… and the perfect day to feature my new @indigo Bookshop mug of the season. I’ve been collecting these as they release, all so pretty!

The weekend was lovely, but now looks like the weather has officially turn; leaves changing, and blowing in the wind.

Hope to finish Dragonfly in Amber this week, the second instalment of the Outlander series, as I’ve been reading it on and off for quite a while. Then onto the next!

Which book are you finishing the month with? Or, what have you got planned for the week?

“The only men who find pleasure in a war are the ones who get to decide that we have one.”

Hello, Thursday!

Another gorgeous day and weekend ahead, and this is the only plan… reading physical books, oh how I missed my books, and enjoying the sunshine.

Now that baby pigeon is off soaring new heights, my obsessive need to capture every little step of its development is no more. My heart is full!

A reel is still in the works, stay tuned, but in the meantime we’re back to regular programming - and (hopefully) posting.

That said, keeping me company today is Nick by Michael Farris Smith. A prequel of sorts to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, that follows Nick Carraway’s character as a soldier and young man.

A deeper dive into such an iconic character, the story draws some interesting parallels to the older Nick we already knew and first fell in love with. Courageous, smart, and every bit as wonderful.

How’s your week, and what’s in store for the weekend?

Bye-bye, summer…

More warm weather and beautiful sunsets to come, but today is officially the last day of summer.

An exceptionally chill yet fun-packed three months for me this year. Didn’t get as much reading done as I normally would, but sure enjoyed my little balcony space to the fullest; morning coffees, catching some rays, and good times with family & friends.

Also, the wildlife - pretty butterflies, dragonflies, squirrels, and birds (my favourite)!

Birdwatching has become a passion and all the more so now, as I’ve been keeping a close eye on the baby pigeon next door.

Pigeons don’t have the best reputation around here and can be quite a nuisance. So when a couple of them took over the neighbour’s unused balcony a while back my only thought was, good riddance.

All of that changed about a week ago. I heard soft cries, looked over, and saw they had a baby! Love at first sight.

I’ve been patiently observing since, hoping to catch its first flight, and finally did! Swipe to see, making its way up onto the railing. Such a special moment to capture, and the highlight of my summer.

Pigeons are amazing. 💛

“The human body needs two hundred grams of salt to survive. The ocean needs far less to erode an island.”

Every Atom Leaves is the debut novel by Belgian writer Peter Vijgen, a poetic journey through land and sea, time and space.

Set on historic Bardsey Island off the Welsh coast, it’s a story about longing. About a man who splits his time between the solitude of the island and the responsibilities of family/work balance on the mainland.

A double life of sorts, by necessity. An understanding between husband and wife, a love so pure it sets you free. Also makes you grow, as individuals and as a unit, and strengthens your bond.

“As sleep draws near, two lives run in parallel within me. Neither cancels the other. They lie side by side in the dark, held apart without touching.”

Intriguing and inspiring, it’s a slower paced read. Unique and precious.

“I once read that the rock beneath us is neither volcanic nor newly born. It survived compression. Hundreds of millions of years ago, underwater landslides and tectonic collisions forced fragments of sea bed and continental crust together into a dense, chaotic mass. Pressure hardened it. When the last glaciers withdrew and the sea rose, the softer land around it eroded. Currents carved the Sound through weaker ground, leaving this harder body standing alone. The island exists because it resisted.”

Big thanks to @moonhorse.press for this #gifted copy, for reaching out, but more importantly; for taking the time to look through my posts and knowing I’d enjoy this book - you were absolutely right… five stars!

Any favourite island vacation memories, or an island you’d like to visit? Would you want to live on an island, or maybe you already do?

In case you missed my Stories over the weekend; we discovered a baby pigeon on my neighbour’s balcony, and fair to say I’m completely obsessed… SO cute!

Haven’t been doing much these past couple of days except look over, as it walks around and gets ready for its first flight. 🥹

Now, coffee in my honey bee mug and time to catch up on some reading - pictured are three books I hope to finish this week:

📖 Every Atoms Leaves, by Peter Vijgen. A most special story about individuality in relation to nature and others, I will be reviewing in the next few days. (Thanks to @moonhorse.press for this #gifted copy.)

📖 Theo of Golden, by Allen Levi, puts a smile on my face just thinking about.

📖 Nick, by Michael Farris Smith, is next up. I buddy read The Great Gatsby over the summer and loved, curious about this more modern and different perspective.

How was your weekend? Did you get much reading done? What are you starting the new week with?

“Theo was in Golden for only a year, from springtime to springtime.”

Just starting Theo of Golden by Allen Levi; my book club’s selection for next month, and already I’m in love - a story about kindness and generosity, hope and community.

Sunshine and blue sky here today, but mornings are getting cooler… this book warms my heart.

Have you read Theo of Golden yet? If so, what did you think?

Any other comforting reads or recent feel-good novel recommendations?

Happy hump day, friends!

September is here, and I’m in denial… so not ready to let go of summer - how about you?

That said, I’m still playing catch-up today and posting my favourite read of August; Country Place by Ann Petry, a short novel first published in 1947.

The story of homecoming, small town secrets, and big dreams. A young soldier is back from war, but a lot has changed in the four years he was gone. His wife seems distant, and people are talking. When a hurricane hits one night, it brings fear but also some much needed clarity.

A special shout out and many thanks to my friend, @rhode_reads, who first introduced me to Ann Petry by hosting a read along of The Street two summers ago. Such a wonderful experience, our little group got together again last August to discuss The Narrows, and already looking forward to Miss Muriel next year!

Booksta is the best. 💛

Which new-to-you author or book did you discover recently?

“His father was a man of few words.”

Land is the latest and much anticipated novel by @maggieofarrellofficial, also my next IRL book club discussion… and I can’t wait!

Set in Ireland, in the aftermath of the Great Hunger, a mapper at work and his son stumble upon a copse; a small group of trees. Passing through will change everything.

“Their feet press down into the thick, blackened leaf-fall. Around them, the golden air is stitched with pollen and the inexplicable flight paths of bees, and teems with the sounds of a forest: birdsong, the creak of branches, the insistent tapping of a woodpecker, the drip of moisture from foliage, the secretive rustle of unseen creatures moving about the undergrowth.”

From then on, memories of times passed come flooding back - along with a wave of change and hope.

“Lands are also formed in another way, suddenly emerging in a different sea, as if nature were compensating the earth for its losses, restoring in one place what it has swallowed up in another.”

A story about loss and betrayal, power and survival, and the magical beauty of nature.

Have you read any of Maggie O’Farrell’s books? Which is your favourite so far?

The Woods by @jhamiltonauthor is out today, and it’s the perfect book to end summer with.

I don’t typically love thrillers; they’re often too predictable, or plot-driven with little character development… but not this one!

From the start, I connected with the main character, Alice - a middle-aged, menopausal woman. The older I get the more I appreciate representation, and my copy included this most interesting note from Adrienne Kerr, Executive Editor at Simon & Schuster Canada:

“The Guardian recently identified “femcore“—a subgenre of body horror, revived or reinterpreted by female authors—as a particularly hot phenomenon, utilize not only for shock value but as a means of reclamation. The Woods taps into this trend, not to explore sexual violence against young women, but to probe gender dynamics and emotional tension in a strained marriage through the lens of righteous, murderous, menopausal rage.”

Grieving from the recent loss of a daughter, Alice, her husband and other two children move out of the city. A new home for the family, and a fresh start.

A quiet neighbourhood, lots of land and nature all around. Only their house is known in the area as the murder house, for its tragic past. A series of bizarre events soon take place, as secrets are finally revealed.

“But for now—‘these woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.’”

Many thanks to @simonschusterca for the #gifted copy.

Which recent or upcoming release(s) are you excited about?
