A friend is visiting this weekend. Fifty years have passed since we first stepped into high school together. Now, in our sixties, we sit talking about life and wondering where the time went. Neither of us remembers authorising it to move quite so quickly!

Our lives have taken very different paths, yet here we are, laughing, reminiscing and picking up where we left off a few years ago in Cape Town. There is something precious about a friendship that leaves room for who you were and who you have become.

Life rarely asks permission before changing our plans. People we love are no longer here, doors close and the future looks different from the one we imagined. Not every loss is a blessing in disguise. Some things simply hurt. But loss does not erase our experience, our memories or our capacity to love.

Perhaps reinvention begins with something small: accepting an invitation, trying something new or quietly deciding, “I’m not finished yet.” My own life has become richer through learning to accept myself and saying yes to possibilities I might once have dismissed.

This weekend reminds me that we can treasure our past while still being curious about our future. Old friends can help us see just how far we have travelled, even while reminding us of things we’d rather they’d forgotten!

Our story is still being written. Whatever your age, leave room for a little surprise, a new adventure and the people who make you feel most yourself.

Music starts at 13:00 and food service begins at 14:00 in Plaza de España. Come hungry and thirsty!
Food and drinks can only be purchased with Cómpeta Cash, available from the desk at the entrance, beneath the taxi rank canopy.

Just to clear up the sudden excitement… 🤣

This post was originally reposted on 12 March 2022.
It seems someone missed the date, picked it up, copied it and reposted it, and suddenly the rumour mill went into overdrive.

So, for the record:
No, I am NOT on my way to the funeral parlour.
No, there is no ulterior motive behind the post.
And no, nothing dramatic has suddenly happened.

I have honestly been in stitches reading the messages flying around, up, down, sideways and probably through a few WhatsApp groups I don’t even know exist.
The only mystery here is how a post from 12 March 2022 has suddenly developed a second life in September 2026.
Proof, once again, that dates are quite useful little things. 🤣 by @mjonkersa

TASTE OF CÓMPETA 2026
SABOR A CÓMPETA 2026

Our next meeting for all VOLUNTEERS and COOKS will take place this Wednesday, 2 September at 18:00 in Cómpeta Town Hall.

If you are already involved, thinking about helping, cooking something, volunteering your time, or simply want to find out more, please come along.
We will go through the outline for this year’s event, explain how everything will work and answer any questions.

🇪🇸Nuestra próxima reunión para todos los VOLUNTARIOS y COCINEROS tendrá lugar este miércoles, 2 de septiembre, a las 18:00 en el Ayuntamiento de Cómpeta.

Si ya participas, estás pensando en ayudar, preparar algún plato, ofrecer tu tiempo como voluntario o simplemente quieres saber más, ven a la reunión.

There is a lesson I keep having to relearn, both in life and as a Councillor: Not everything is mine to fix.

When people come to you with a problem, a frustration or something that simply feels unfair, your instinct is to want to sort it out. To make the phone call. Find the answer. Push a little harder. Knock on another door.

And I still believe we should do those things. Because we absolutely can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Sometimes it is something big. More often, it is simply listening when somebody feels ignored, helping someone understand a system they are struggling with, making an introduction, offering encouragement, or refusing to walk past a problem because it belongs to “someone else”.
Those small acts matter enormously.

But there is another side to this that I am learning too. You can care deeply about something and still not control the outcome.

You can raise the issue, fight the corner, send the email, make the call and chase the answer, but eventually there comes a point where the decision belongs to somebody else.

And carrying those things around in your head long after you have done everything you reasonably can doesn’t solve them. It simply steals a little piece of your own peace.

Perhaps that is something all of us need to remember. Concentrate your energy where you can make a difference.

Be kinder. Help someone. Speak up. Show up. Make the call. Have the difficult conversation. Give somebody five minutes of your time when they need it.

And when something truly sits outside your control, learn to put it down. That isn’t giving up.

It is understanding the difference between caring about something and being responsible for everything.

We cannot fix the whole world. But every single day, in the small corner of it that we occupy, we have an opportunity to make somebody else’s world just a little better.

And perhaps that is more than enough for one day.
