PURE PRESENCE ...

Last weekend I had the amazing opportunity to shoot video and photography for @oni_fights.

Now, with my AuDHD wiring, standing safely outside the action wasn’t going to cut it at all. I asked permission to take the corner—fully aware I might actually catch a punch in the face.

When fighters came crashing into that corner, bending the ropes and pressing against me while I held the camera, something changed. I wasn’t watching anymore. I was “inside the pocket” of real raw relevance of those willing to go the distance.

I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time. It was awesome!

There is something inside me - even on the days when my feelings lie to me and whisper “failure” in my ear - I keeps moving forward. That’s probably part of why, at 58 years old, I go to @triumphcombat every week and willingly get knocked around in this Pure Pocket of The Present that these fighters were experiencing.

Someone did technically “win” each fight. And rightly so.

But - was winning really the most important thing?

Because what stayed with me was what happened afterward among the combatants.

Respect & Brotherhood

The unspoken understanding between fighters on their own journeys of:

“I’m not done yet. No matter what anybody says.”

So when the bell rings —
who are you really fighting?

Because the smiling that happened between the contenders after the fight seemed there was a layer beneath where something more existed.

It was about finding out who you are when there’s nowhere left to hide.

And in that place is something very Pure.

Last weekend, Hudson K and I headed out before sunrise into Daniel Boone National Forest, hiking the Auxier Ridge Trail to shoot a project for UK and Kentucky Geological Survey.

The goal was to capture relevant imagery of Kentucky’s naturally formed rock structures, surrounding landscape, geology, and the environment that makes this part of the state so distinctive and beautiful to be used in educational materials.

My DJI Inspire was temporarily out of commission after losing a fist fight with hard winds and a very unforgiving bush, so Hudson brought the KGS Mavic 3 and handled the flying while I got to creative direct.

Hudson is not much for social media, but he deserves a thank-you. He showed up at 5:30 AM in the morning, hiked with me to location by around 6:30 AM, and had the drone in the air right at dawn so we could capture the landscape in some incredible early-morning light.

Thanks, Hudson, for putting up with me, trusting the vision, and helping us get the shots. Great morning in the field for KGS.

MONDAY 💕 FUNDAY!
Apparently, “active recovery” means letting a boxing glove rearrange your thoughts.

At 58 years old, with five stents, I’m apparently still committed to making questionable recreational decisions.

But hey—nothing clears the Monday brain fog quite like getting hit in the face.

Coffee is probably safer… but apparently I enjoy learning things the hard way. 🥊😂

WALKING SHOES

There was a time when I thought I carried my father’s ashes across Spain.

Years later, I am no longer certain that was true.

A pilgrim believes he is walking toward a destination. But the road knows better. The road is always walking the pilgrim toward himself.

Although I carried my father in my pack, I carried far more of him within me.

His courage.
His failures.
His dreams.
His unfinished stories.

Across mountains, through rain, under stars older than memory, I kept hearing something that had no sound.

“Keep going.”

Not because the road was easy.
Not because I knew where it led.
But because life reveals itself only to those willing to take the next step.

Somewhere on the Camino, I understood a secret that every son eventually learns:

The people we love do not disappear.

They become part of our journey.

They become the voice that steadies us when fear arrives.
The hand on our shoulder when no one is there.
The memory that reminds us who we are when we have forgotten.

I went to Spain believing I was taking my father try to find how life should be.

Instead, The Way showed me that home was never a place.

It was the part of him that had been walking beside me all along.

ARE WE HAVING FUN YET?

Took my child to Bolivia to show them their grandfather’s country.
Another world.
Another way of life.

So naturally… I took them to Uyuni during the dry season.

Except Bolivia said:
“LOL no.”

It got so cold that year it snowed on the salt flats.
And when snow touches salt, Uyuni turns into a giant mirror.

Winter pretending to be springtime.

Meanwhile I’m freezing my ass off, questioning every life decision…

…and my kid is out there laughing like a tiny mountain goat possessed by joy.

NOT - they did questioned my sanity!

Along the sacred road of melted cheese and tomato sauce, we discovered that pizza is not made with flour alone, but with laughter kneaded into the dough by many hands. One sliced, another shredded mountains of cheese, and someone surely burned the first crust as a sacrifice to the gods of friendship. 🍕

And in that moment, we understood: the universe always conspires in favor of those who gather around homemade pizza with people they love. For the true secret ingredient was never mozzarella… it was the joy shared between souls pretending they knew what they were doing in the kitchen. ❤️
