This Monday marked a huge moment for “Matt About Town” and @wtopnews: We won a NATIONAL MURROW AWARD for “excellence in feature reporting!” đŸ„‡ I can’t begin to tell you how massive this is. The Murrows are the gold standard in journalism, and I can’t thank @rtdna.news enough for their recognition of our hard work. After about two years of running around the Capital Region, bringing community-driven, human interest stories to the DMV, we achieved something truly spectacular. This award is a testament to everything we set out to build with this show, as we try to brighten up the news cycle one amusing, informative, or flat-out wonky story at a time every Tuesday and Thursday! The thanks I’d like to convey to @juliaziegler1 and the entire WTOP team can’t simply be expressed in words; their impact goes far beyond what I can write here. They have helped grow this show into something bigger than I ever thought possible, and I am forever grateful. As a trusted leader in the DC area, WTOP has once again proven they are also an industry trend setter by allowing a show like “Matt About Town” to flourish. Lastly, thanks to all of you who tuned in, whether it’s online or on the air. At the end of the day, MAT is nothing without our dedicated audience. Please keep watching/listening: this is only the beginning! 🏆 by @mkaufax

đŸŽ„ Bringing D.C. to Life—One Story at a Time đŸŽ€For Matt Kaufax (@mkaufax), journalism isn’t just about reporting—it’s about capturing the heart of a community. From covering serious news to chasing hidden gems, Matt has found his niche telling off-the-beaten-path stories that highlight the people, places, and experiences that make D.C. special. His WTOP series “Matt About Town” is all about diving deep into unique events—like underground garage bike racing—and showing the world what makes them worth knowing. đŸđŸšŽâ€â™‚ïžâ€œIt’s all about taking little slices of life and sharing them in a way people can enjoy, love, and get a kick out of.”Like, share, and follow @dczestystory for more stories that celebrate the people shaping our city!#dczestystory #mattabouttown #wtopnews #localstories #madeindc #journalism #communitymatters by @mkaufax

Changing the game! đŸŽ„đŸŽžïžđŸ€łMore great news: “Matt About Town” and @wtopnews won an @apnews award last night
for being the best “digital storytellers” in the region! We are the first ever winners of this category in its inaugural year, and i’m grateful to the Chesapeake AP Broadcasters Association for adding this category into their run of show. It shows that they understand how the media landscape is changing in the digital age – and how storytelling has to change along with it. đŸ“± 📰 đŸ“ș Of all the critical acclaim “Matt About Town” has received (all of which I’m incredibly humbled by and grateful for), this award is special, because it’s our first prize exclusively for video content produced by us, a radio station turned multimedia outfit đŸ“» 🎩 đŸŽ™ïž Special thanks to @juliaziegler1 for being a champion of my vision, and to all of you who like, comment, follow, and engage with my stories on social media platforms like this one every week. This award is a direct result of your support! by @mkaufax

🩄 DC’S UNICORN STATUES 🩄 What do Bill Clinton, Marion Barry, and the Soviet Union all have in common? If your first answer was two obscure unicorn statues tucked away in one of the most northwest parts of DC
go buy a lottery ticket. They are the only markers of their kind in the entire DMV—unicorns, both literally and figuratively—and in today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” we’re investigating the fascinating history behind them.Special shout out to friend of the show @austinkgraff, who highlights the statues in his new book, “111 Places for Kids in Washington That You Must Not Miss.”📾: Archival photos in this story used courtesy of the Library Of Congress. NEW ZOO TIGER 🐅 The @smithsonianzoo is hoping a brand-new tiger baby will come soon, as their newest female tiger begins to settle in! In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” I’m back in the Zoo’s Great Cats wing to catch up with their newest arrival, 235-pound female Amur tiger Coba—and to learn more about the Zoo’s efforts to rehabilitate an endangered species! The last time I was here, it was about a year and a half ago (right when Coba arrived) to see 350-pound male Vostok—her potential mate. So far, big cats keeper Charlie Shaw tells me the two have met once (they’re taking things slow), but it’s going to be a little while before the pair are “going steady.” 🐯 Amur tigers, which you might know as Siberian tigers, are an endangered species. And in the Zoo’s ever-ongoing mission of conservation, the effort to produce a tiger cub is an endeavor they don’t take lightly. But that doesn’t mean it can’t also be a whole lot of fun along the way! PIRATES đŸŽâ€â˜ ïž GHOSTS đŸ‘» HISTORY 📜It’s the latest DC area offering from @touralexandria —a walking tour in historic Old Town Alexandria that combines swashbuckling history with scary stories from beyond the grave đŸȘŠ Introducing the ALX pirate ghost tour! Alexandria Colonial Tours has been doing their traditional ghost tours, featuring colonial-clad tour guides walking you through the streets of ALX by lantern light, for the last 40+ years. This new tour combines those vibes with all new stories—and takes you into even more off-the-beaten-path locations in the city. From stories of a 100-year pirate war over oysters, to gun fights on King St, even a little-known Alexandria connection to Blackbeard himself, there’s a little something here for everyone. And you end the night in a graveyard where perhaps the scariest story of all is revealed! You can get your tickets to this tour, which the company hopes will become a new permanent fixture, on the Alexandria Colonial Tours website! 📾: Archival photos in this story used courtesy of the Library Of Congress. THE DECLARATION’S PROMISE 📜đŸȘ¶đŸ‡ș🇾 The Library Of Congress is debuting a new exhibit on July 3rd for the 250th birthday of America, and in today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” I got inside for a sneak preview!Featuring 121 rare American artifacts, “The Declaration’s Promise: A Revolutionary Idea” showcases some of the most insane pieces of history you won’t find anywhere else. The flagship item on exhibit is an original first draft of the Declaration of Independence itself, written in Thomas Jefferson’s own hand—and featuring edits from John Adams and Ben Franklin in the margins. đŸ€Ż 😼 There’s also an original handwritten copy of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, Frederick Douglass’ moving speech on “the meaning of July 4th,” and even copies of the first colonial newspapers published after the US declared its independence from Britain. 🇬🇧 đŸ„Š đŸ‡ș🇾 Beyond the cool items on display though, there is a deeper message here: one of democracy, of equality, and of striving to be the best that we can be as a nation – for the past 250 years and hopefully for 250 more! The Declaration’s Promise will be open to the public in the Treasures Gallery of the Library Of Congress Jefferson Building in DC for an entire year starting this Friday. 📾: Archival photos in this story used courtesy of the Library Of Congress. GEORGE THE GOOSE’S LOVE STORY đŸȘżIt’s a story of love, American icons, and the birds and the bees (somewhat literally); one of the @smithsonianzoo’s best kept secrets! 💞 đŸȘżđŸŠƒIn today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” I’m telling you the incredible tale of George Washington—just in time for America 250. No
I’m not referring to America’s first president. Rather, a Ross’s goose at the Zoo who shares his name 😆 George the Goose currently resides in the Zoo’s bird habitat—and he’s something of a cross-species Casanova. 💓From an early age, George’s taste in companions was atypical of his species. He’s had four older wives in his six years on earth...and three of them have been turkeys! His current wife, 8-year-old standard bronze turkey Felicity, and he have been voted the Zoo’s cutest couple by staff 2 years running. And after spending an afternoon filming them, it’s easy to see why. It’s a story that could only unfold at a place like the National Zoo—one you’ll probably never see anywhere else! EINSTEIN MEMORIAL đŸ‘šâ€đŸ”Źâš›đŸ„ŒIt’s technically the only statue in DC where climbing is
encouraged! And although it’s close to the National Mall, the Einstein Memorial often flies under the radar. In today’s episode of “Matt About Town,” I got to climb into Einstein’s lap with DC author, creator, and explorer @austinkgraff. While we were there, we also explored the National Academy of Sciences (@thenasciences)! The Einstein Memorial actually sits on the front lawn of NAS, and if you didn’t know about this building—it’s one of the most underrated places to explore in the city. The building triples as a working office space, museum, and events center—and has some fascinating history of its own. NAS is open to tours for the public too. All you have to do is schedule on their website, and you too can explore a world of science not many in the city know about. And while you’re there
make sure you pay Albert a visit! Find more episodes of “Matt About Town” on WTOP’s website, inside the WTOP News app, or on 103.5FM.Follow me on IG (@mkaufax), TikTok (@themattabouttown), and Facebook (Matt Kaufax TV)!(đŸŽ„: WTOP/Matt Kaufax) by @mkaufax
