There’s something both wildly satisfying and mildly offensive about watching your kids live the childhood you worked so hard to give them. 😂

When I was 15, I stole my dad’s car & drove my best friend & I to go meet boys..
without a license or any idea on how to actually drive..

Meanwhile, mine are like, “We’re going to our friend’s house,” and casually take the jet ski down the river.

The audacity.

But I was thinking about this today because I’m pretty sure every generation of parents looks at their kids and thinks, You have absolutely no idea how good you have it.

And I’m also pretty sure my parents thought the exact same thing about me.

I grew up with a really good life. We weren’t rich, but I never went without. And still, somewhere along the way, I decided I wanted to work hard enough to give my kids even more.

I think that’s one of the weird things about being a business owner. Almost anything starts to feel possible.

Want the thing? Book another client.
Want the trip? Make another sale.
Want to give your kids some ridiculous experience? Okay, figure out how to pay for it.

There’s always another goal. Another level. Another “once we get there.”

And every once in a while, you get a random weekend where you watch your kids ride their jet ski to their friend’s house and realize…

Oh.

Maybe this was part of the “there” I was working so hard to get to.

They still have absolutely no idea how good they have it.

But apparently, neither did I. 😂 by @mklajade

Apparently anyone making 7-8 figures is doing it from their phone, working 4 hours a week, taking Tuesdays off for Pilates, and answering emails from a beach in Tulum.

Meanwhile, I’ve been putting in 14 hour days lately. 😂
And before anyone comes for me, I actually DO believe in working smarter. I believe in building systems. Hiring great people. Creating leverage. Making more money without personally touching every single thing.
I’ve also been in business long enough to know that it comes in seasons.
There are seasons where everything clicks and you think, “Holy shit. We actually built this”
And then there are seasons where you’re working from 5am-9pm, solving problems you didn’t know existed, questioning every decision you’ve ever made, and wondering why you ever thought working for yourself sounded fun.
Growth is weird like that.
Sometimes the thing you prayed for shows up disguised as more responsibility, bigger decisions, harder conversations, more people depending on you, and an entirely new category of problems you have absolutely no idea how to solve yet.
And somewhere in the middle of that chaos, you realize:
These are the problems we used to wish for.
I wanted the business.
I wanted the team.
I wanted the opportunity.
I wanted the growth.
Turns out you don’t get to choose only the pretty parts of the thing you asked for.
So yes, we’re tired.
And Yes, I will continue making fun of the internet’s “I made $100k while taking a nap” genre of entrepreneurship.
And yes, I’m still incredibly grateful.
Because this season will pass too.
We’ll solve these problems, create new systems, grow into the next version of the business...
and eventually earn ourselves an entirely new set of problems to complain about. 😂 by @mklajade

I hear some version of this ALL the time.

“They already spent so much.”

“I don’t want to ask them for more.”

“My clients aren’t those kinds of clients.”

But here’s the thing…

We’re deciding how much our clients are willing to spend before they ever get the chance to decide for themselves.

A couple spending $6K on wedding photography has already told you something pretty important:

Photography matters to them.

That doesn’t mean every client is going to spend another $2K.

They won’t.

But if the only thing we ever give them after the wedding is a gallery link and an online store, we have absolutely no idea what they would have done if someone had actually helped them.

Show them their photographs.

Let them experience them.

Help them figure out what they want to do with them.

Give them options.

And then let THEM decide what their wedding photographs are worth.

Stop spending your clients’ money for them. taken in Dallas, Texas by @mklajade

We will spend thousands on education to become better photographers. 📸

Thousands more on gear.

We’ll learn posing, lighting, editing, social media….

But suggest actually SELLING something to the clients we already worked so hard to get?

Suddenly everybody gets uncomfortable.

“I don’t want to be salesy.”

Neither do I.

But somewhere along the way, I think we started confusing selling with pressuring.

They aren’t the same thing.

Your clients hired you because they value photography. They trusted you with one of the biggest days of their lives. And then for a lot of photographers, the experience ends with a gallery link and a “hope you love them!”

Meanwhile, those images they invested thousands of dollars to create are living on a phone.

I don’t think there’s anything gross about sitting down with a client, showing them what they created with you, helping them figure out what they actually want to DO with those photographs, and giving them the opportunity to buy it.

Yes, you make more money.

They also walk away with something they probably never would have created on their own.

That sounds like pretty good business to me. by @mklajade

The inquiry is only the beginning.
ㅤ
What happens next is where the client starts deciding how safe, clear, and supported the experience feels.
ㅤ
Especially in maternity and newborn photography.
ㅤ
These clients are not making a casual decision.
ㅤ
They are thinking about their baby.
Their family.
Their body.
A season that is changing faster than they expected.
ㅤ
So when they pause, go quiet, or need more time, it does not always mean they are uninterested.
ㅤ
Sometimes they just need a clearer path.
ㅤ
At the Maternity & Newborn Photographers Summit in Grapevine, I’ll be talking about what happens after the inquiry comes in, and how photographers can guide clients through the buying experience with more confidence and care.
ㅤ
If you’ll be there, I’d love to see you.

I figured it was probably time for a proper introduction. 🫶

If you're new here..
ㅤ
Hi. I'm Makayla. 😊
ㅤ
Most people know me through Conferences and my Sales Agency, but this page is going to be a little different.
ㅤ
You'll still see plenty of conversations about business, leadership, sales, client experience, and what it really looks like to grow a company.
ㅤ
But you'll also see the things that exist outside of work.
ㅤ
The people I love.
ㅤ
The lessons I'm learning.
ㅤ
The moments that make life feel meaningful.
ㅤ
The wins, the challenges, and everything in between.
ㅤ
Because while my Company is a huge part of my life, it's not the whole story.
ㅤ
This carousel shares a little bit about how I got here, what I care about, and why I do what I do. 🤍
ㅤ
And if any part of it resonates with you, I'm glad you're here.
Tell me a little about yourself below.
ㅤ
I'd genuinely love to know who's following along. 🥹✨
