I recently had the opportunity to give a TEDx talk, The Power of Equity in Sport. It was a humbling experience- partly because of the preparation for TED approval, and partly because I felt vulnerable delivering a message I feel so passionate about. It was also rewarding. I learned so much about myself and I learned from the other speakers. It was an inspiring personal growth experience I am truly grateful for. I am also grateful I had family in the audience to support me. Thank you to my Dad, who introduced me to sports. I looked at him directly at one point, and caught him wiping a tear. I will remember that for a long time. To my brother Paul, who has always been a great supporter, and to my daughter @sophespoo who inspires me everyday to fight for equity. 🙏 ❤️I am hoping to get the message out to as many people as possible to inspire new thinking and ideas to expedite equity in sports. Five years ago, we stood in a nearly empty Madison Square Garden, about 25 of us, watching something much bigger than a game unfold.The Dream Gap Tour was a statement. The greatest athletes deserved more: more visibility, more opportunity, and a sustainable professional league with a true living wage.Our team at Bauer was proud to support that mission. Together with my brother Mark Messier’s foundation, we helped raise funds and worked alongside the PWHPA, MSG, and MSG Network to bring the first women’s game to the world’s most famous arena.It was during COVID, so there were no fans. But what happened in that building was unforgettable.Billie Jean King stood above the ice, speaking directly to the players: “Look up at the most iconic ceiling in all of sports and entertainment, because you’re about to bust through it.” Chills thinking about it now. We captured a bit of the magic, the history- mic’d up moments, behind the scenes, the players sheer joy. Fast forward to tonight—the PWHL takes the ice at a sold-out Madison Square Garden.What started as a statement in 2021… tonight is a realization of that dream.So much respect to the athletes and everyone behind the PWHL for never wavering—and for building something that is changing the future of the game.Proud of the role we played then. One week back from Milan 🇮🇹.Grateful to the @thepwhlofficial for bringing together an inspiring group of leaders, builders, and sports legends, including Billie Jean King, and for creating space for real connection around the Olympics.Some of the best moments happened away from the rink — open conversations, real brainstorming, and lots of laughs. 😂 It feels like a pivotal moment for women’s hockey, one where belief, visibility, and partnership are aligning to unlock an exponential growth trajectory.Excited to keep building together and harness the power of this collective to drive meaningful change. 💪🏒 by @mkmessier11

Being there and watching athletes represent their countries at the Olympics was such a powerful experience.In the women’s final, Team USA never quit,tying the game late and then winning gold in overtime.Team Canada, arguably up against the strongest U.S. team ever, played with tenacity, grit, and heart, leaving everything they had out there on the ice.It was the response from Canadians that impacted me most. Unmistakably proud and deeply supportive.At Canada Ice House, athletes and families came together in the most quintessentially Canadian way — warm, humble, and united.Sharing that experience with my brother, husband and @bauerhockey teammates made it even more meaningful.Men’s gold medal game up next. 🇨🇦 vs 🇺🇸 Let’s go! by @mkmessier11

MP 🇨🇦 and Hilary 🇺🇸. Olympic gold on the line.Both competing in their 5th Olympic Games and continuing to rewrite the record books.They were the first two athletes I signed as we launched our @bauerhockey Women’s strategy and they’ve helped shape every part of the journey since. From growing the game and informing product to building community and expanding what’s possible for girls and women in hockey.Beyond the legacy, we’ve worked through challenges, built solutions, celebrated milestones, and had a lot of fun along the way. The journey means everything to me.I’ve hoped for years to see this matchup live. What a moment for the game and what a privilege to witness it. by @mkmessier11

On this day, I am grateful for the unparalleled passion and commitment of my teammates at Bauer, and for all the brilliant, compassionate, fierce women who have lifted me up when I needed it most and continue to inspire me to fight the good fight. There is much work still to be done to create equitable opportunities for girls and women in hockey. I believe girls and women present the greatest opportunity for growth in sport. That is why I am so excited to be a part of the @hockeycanada steering committee, alongside other leaders dedicated to ensuring a plan to equitably achieve the projected growth in participation and a supportive ecosystem with opportunities for women at all levels of hockey. It starts with understanding the current landscape and inviting Canadians across the country to share perspectives to shape a more inviting, inclusive game for all. If you are passionate about creating equity in hockey, please take the time to read this paper and share it with your network. We need to expand the conversation to be successful.
