Life has its ups and downs. Pushing through with changes while staying me. by @mkorc

They say less than 1% of people have finished a marathon. These days about 12.5% of people will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

In the last year, I finished my first marathon. Training was tough: long hours, early mornings, changing priorities, but I had my running buddies. Race day came. I had the help of family and friends to cheer me on but also pace me. I did that! I ran a marathon. I didn’t say never again but I said I don’t know when for the next one.

Now, I’m in a different marathon. The one to fight triple negative breast cancer. Chemo sessions (started), surgery, maybe radiation are all in front of me. Those family and friends are still there with me and it means everything.

I also ran my first half marathon. I most likely had the cancer inside of me at this time and didn’t know. I can’t remember exactly when I first felt the tumor but it was around then.

I’m temporarily retired from running. I’ll be back. I still don’t know when my next 26.2 will be but it will come.

Don’t wait until breast cancer awareness month or any health related matter month. Check your body, know your body, see your doctor, ask questions. Early detection and preventive care matters.

I found a lump in April or May and like many at first didn’t think anything of it. I have dense breast tissue and no family history. But I got it checked and on August 7, I found out it was cancerous. Checking your boobies yourself works.

Did you know there is more than 1 kind of breast cancer? Mine is triple negative breast cancer or TNBC. Treatment plans are different for the types of breast cancer.

I began treatment. It didn’t go as planned. I had a severe reaction. I was admitted to the hospital and moved to ICU. I was discharged and weak but my spirits weren’t broken and I told this cancer numerous times it’s getting the fuck out of me.

I got rest at home and changed my treatment plan. So far it’s gone better. Still many more months to go.

I have the best support system with my family and friends. It takes a village to deal with this even though I’m not good at being vulnerable. I appreciate all the love and support I’ve gotten so far and I know I’ll continue to get.

I don’t know how often I’ll share posts. This journey is overwhelming and I am Scorpio that doesn’t open up easily.

But here is to breast cancer awareness month. Check your boobies. Advocate for yourself and your body. Don’t wait for that mammogram until you are 40. And this goes for all genders.

So much can change in a moment or 3 years.
It’s been 3 years since I started chemo and then hospitalized before continuing treatment. When I was laying in that ICU bed, I knew I would get out but didn’t know what my future would look like.
It’s been good!

Say yes to travel with a friend.

We’ve stayed best friends for so long because we’ve always allowed each other to grow in our own way. Different friend groups, different hobbies, different cities, different countries. Weddings, marriage, kids, cancerβ€”we’ve been through it all, and we’ve always been there for each other unconditionally. ❀️

I’m a triathlete!!

2022 Marathon.
2023 Half marathon. Then came my biggest race, breast cancer. I nearly died after my first chemo & immunotherapy infusion. 5 nights / 6 days in the ICU without even walking. Then about 2 months later anaphylactic shock to chemotherapy. Have you ever thrown up while your throat is closing in? It’s not recommended.
2024 Surgery, more chemo, radiation, oral chemo finally finished end of November. Back to basically no walking with hand foot syndrome as a side effect and dying toenails.
2025 Cleared from doctors to run again. Half marathon. Food poisoning week of half marathon 2. Covid for the first time. Rested. Started lifting. Stopped running long distances.
2026 I’m doing a triathlon cause I told @boogiedebeast I would. Thank you so much for the coaching. Skin cancer removal delayed training. Today I did it!

I can do anything! I am determined to keep living and doing things that challenge me but also bring me joy.

@26.2angel your surprise on the course was perfect timing, gave me an extra push!
@gregster1982 thank you for all of the advice!
@auriainthegarden thank you for being out there & checking if I needed anything.
THANK YOU to everyone who donated to my fundraiser to @getinvolvedchla / @childrensla. Thank you @supertri_usa for the great event.
@aegtriteam @aegworldwide @axsevents WE DID IT

Happy #globalrunningday

Morning runs help me get my day going. Chemo / perimenopause brain fog has me with awkward pauses while speaking. It’s life at this point. However, running lets me get out of my intrusive thoughts and just be in the moment.

Be active. Move your body.

In 2019 I thought about doing a triathlon, but I traveled a lot for work at that time and I didn’t want to commit to the training. A few years later, I ran my first marathon, and then my first half marathon. Then I was diagnosed with cancer. I came back and I ran 2 half marathons. I told a friend, @boogiedebeast, that I would do a triathlon in 2026 if I did not get into any of the world major marathons I wanted to run. Well, I did not get in. I’ve been training for my tri on and I finally registered today with Team AEG to fundraise for cancer research at @childrensla.

As a cancer survivor, I truly understand the importance of cancer research. No amount is too small to donate and any amount donated to my page I greatly appreciate!
