a whirlwind of a weekend wearing multiple hats! so grateful to be a school librarian & author in such an incredible children’s literature community 💙 loved seeing old friends & making new ones at ALA 2026! more photos to come, but for now: thank you to rebecca bendheim for asking me to be part of this queer kidlit joy panel - it was an honor to be up there among such incredible creators! we were positively staggered by the turnout of 60+ people and so touched by everyone who shared their own stories with us 🥹🙌🔥 thank you to all my new pals speaking of pals: cam and i finally got to meet in person after making an entire book together!!! BEYOND THEY/THEM wouldn’t be nearly as impactful without cam’s illustrations - go check out their award-winning graphic novel, THE RIBBON SKIRT, if you haven’t already! and speaking of BEYOND THEY/THEM: i was absolutely blown away to meet the inimitable maia kobabe. e was kind enough to sign eir page in my book - just the loveliest human 💙 always so cool to see ATHLETE IS AGENDER on display, especially during pride 🌈 thank you to all the kind & generous ppl at little, brown! thank you to AASL ISS for pulling off an incredible independent school library tour of three chicago schools, where i snapped a photo of this quote snapped this photo at the field museum of natural history, which was awesome. i especially loved the gallery showcasing Native Truths: Our Voices, Our Stories and thank you, thank you, thank you to rainbow round table and harlequin trade publishing for awarding me the grant that got me here. sharing the QR code to the resource packet i created for our panel - and feeling very lucky for the support i have received as a queer school librarian 💙 HAPPY PRIDE!!!! by @mlereads

IT’S BEYOND THEY/THEM’S BOOK BIRTHDAY!!!! 🥳🥳🌈🌈✨✨ it’s hard to express what it means to me for this book to be out in the world today. amidst all the attacks on trans, nonbinary, and genderdiverse people not just in the states but around the world, this book is a reminder that “nonbinary people have always been here and can be found everywhere.” when i worry that i’m not doing enough, i try to remember that queer existence is resistance. existing openly and proudly is important. hard things always are. well, existing is the easy part. it’s the world that makes it hard. thank you to everyone @andrewsmcmeelkids for bringing this book into a world that desperately needs it, even if it doesn’t always want it. thank you to @cameronmukwa for your gorgeous illustrations – this book would not be what it is without you. and thank you, reader – i wouldn’t be an author if you weren’t here 💙 by @mlereads
