Up and back to Berry in a day to celebrate Frenchie‘s 87th birthday. Stunning lunch from the Countess, cheese I couldn’t stop eating, beautiful cake from @la_renaissance_patisserie, hand-painted plates by dad‘s youngest sister in France, post lunch moments of imagining royal status in some long gone nation of twigged hats, a wander through the garden with the new growth and the Bogongs, perfect twilight on the way home and a rosey sky for turning in. 💫 by @mllemdeh

Hard to find sufficient words to express the love for this one, the memory of his birth 22 years ago today, the magnificent in between of all the years. Je t’aime profondément mon fils. Joyeux anniversaire! ♥️❤️ by @mllemdeh

Sunday arvo on Dharawal and Dhurga Country at Bundanon. Blessed and blissed to listen to ‘Stories of Water and Earth’, song travels with @nardiga and @ensembleoffspring from the Country we sat on to Yuwaalaraay Country. Falling star grandmas, planets hanging by kurrajong twine, tangle trees that make nest homes in flood and singing the birds with Nardi. All in view of Bangli/Shoalhaven River. Truly, deeply nourishing. 💫🌗🙏🏼

Lunch with @michaelkellyfineart is always delightful. Perusing the palette and dip pens he is taking to Eastern Europe in a week, learning about colours ‘moon glow’ and ‘potter’s pink’ and then trying to identify them in Sketchbook 43. The Wynyard image was drawn/painted after a previous visit to the Library when I showed Michael where his sketchbooks live in stack at PXA 7685, something he wrote about on that same page … including his joy in meeting his stack neighbour, artist Sydney Ure Smith. Bon voyage, Michael.

This beautiful feline is 15 today. We got her at 9 weeks old, a Christmas present for kiddo, a kitten who fetched, who wrapped around me like a scarf while I wrote my Masters thesis. A source of constant bemusement and intrigue, a complex character who rewards with her decision to love you, to sit on you after a long, tired day and soothe with her kneading, who sleeps curled beside my head and warbles in the night to tell me she is there and make sure I am too. Happy days, beautiful charcoal tuxedo Yuki. 🩶🩶🤍 by @mllemdeh

What better thing to do early on a Monday morning? The next entry in my make-everything-in-the-French-baking-book is … palmiers. I have long adored them and never made them. Proof that butter, flour and vanilla sugar can be perfection. And bien sûr I made the puff by hand! Bon appétit! 💫 by @mllemdeh

Colleague Marty leant over this afternoon to share these beautiful signs of life. They sometimes take my breath. The 1862 Valentine’s Day cards sent by Dame Mary Gilmore’s father Donald to her mother Mary Ann, a photo of Pa alongside the family ginger beer recipe and words Mary’s mother wrote for 2 of her babies who died.

A cry to thee my birdling
Ah wither hast thou flown?
Why hast thou left the parents’ nest?
Why from my bosom gone?

Manuscript archives are the background, the back story, the back room, the back of the mind ideas, the evidence of playing, percolating and shaping. Many institutions shy away from exhibiting them because they’re (apparently) not ‘visual’ or take time to take in. So, props to @ccwm_sydney for ‘Sorted’, a look at Tracey Moffat’s archive, with its beautiful cardboard stapled walls and paste up design. And for the sharp and rich selection of Seidler manuscript material upstairs. 📄🗓️ by @mllemdeh

Just had to make a little book yesterday, press my hands along the papers, pull the thread, wrap the boards with care. I started with a piece of used pink archival tape that I found at work and went from there. All cerise and magenta before I knew it. The balm of making is real. 🩷♥️ by @mllemdeh

It’s a French aunty’s birthday today and I’m finally putting this in the mail to her - a little album of our time together in the Basque Country last year. Made by hand using a favourite concertina and lock form I learnt @owlandlion last year, there’s no stitching, no glue … just paper. And it holds so perfectly tight and lies so perfectly open. Beautiful memories. Joyeux anniversaire Bilou! 🌿 by @mllemdeh

I’m back at work and preparing for this! Part of our 200th Anniversary lecture series, I’ll be exploring the new(ish) frontier of collecting digital archives, the hurdles, the doubts, the surprises, the opportunities … and importantly the need for archives and libraries to do this work with the same enthusiasm we’ve given paper for hundreds of years! Whether you’re an archivist, someone assembling an archive now or in the future, a researcher who will need digital archives or you’re just one of those archive lovers (we are many!), I’d love to have you and your thoughts and questions in the room and/or please share with anyone you think may enjoy or benefit. It’s free! Register via link in bio.
