Last Friday I had the privilege of displaying a project so dear to me at @lcacdenver . It was my first installation piece being a photographer and all, so I wanted to make it really special especially since losing my pup so close to the exhibits timeline.

Since 2020 child migration has increased and as a child migrant myself I wanted to honor all the children who made the journey over here. With immigrant hate at an all time high it is also important to combat that with love. #badbunnyoncesaid

For this project I didn’t know what to do but I knew I wanted to honor my dog, Muffin, #gonetoosoon. I also wanted to incorporate the year of the horse because I was born during that year. Then suddenly I came up with the sketch of me as a child hijacking a paletero cart with my dog Muffin being carried away by none other than CHIP HORSE!!!

Dogs in film and literature typically represent loyalty- having Muffin there represents that loyalty we have as immigrants to our culture and preserving it. Stray dogs are also very common in Mexico and street vendors would always feed them. Muffin also jumped on everything so I wouldn’t doubt he would have jumped on a paletero cart if he were give the chance . I named it after the monarch butterfly because just like immigrants they migrate.

I truly couldn’t have done this without my mentor @andrewkshepherd whom I cried too so much during this because I miss my dog and together we found a way to make this work. Also a big shoutout Ryan at the @arapahoelibrary for coming through and 3d printing Muffin after my 3d printer broke!

To make the cart I used plywood, chips, handles from my own drawers and made epoxy popsicles. The cart was honestly held on by hope and whimsy-I miss my dog and I miss my home country so I am glad to honor them both. #immigrant #art taken in Denver, Colorado by @mm.ariana
