Yesterday marked a whole year without you. I wish I could say it gets easier but the more time that passes and the more your memory fades, the more I find myself with this painful gut feeling of missing a part of what makes me, “me”. This entire year has felt different. I miss calling you every morning on the way to work and venting about how awful the DMV traffic is. I miss your big, warm, suffocating hugs. I miss how you used to wake me up when I was home in the most annoying way, but it always ended in us both on the floor laughing. I miss your presence; the house feels so empty without you. I miss how smart and handy you were, and I regret how I took that for granted. I miss us cracking jokes on the couch and annoying mom while watching some show about Alaska or Semi-Trucks or both (Ice Road Truckers was his shit). I miss how magical and special you made Christmas feel. But overall, I miss how much you understood me and my soft heart even though you were as stubborn and tough as a box of rocks. I’ll forever cherish the last thing you said to me, “I’ll miss you.” And with all my heart and soul Dad, I’ll miss you too until we meet again. by @mm_mcd
