KENDAMA SAVED MY LIFE

the wrong time doesn’t really exist,equally the right time is forever absent. Being an artist is a difficult path. You create these things,moments,objects etc. but you objectively can’t identify the good from the bad. Forever creating but never sharing. This has been the cycle I’ve found myself in time after time. When to post? What to share? What to hold back? Who knows.

As I’m approaching my 14th year of playing #kendama I’m amazed at how it’s taken over my life at times and also saved my life. When I found kendama I never thought It would become such a force in my own life and others. When I found kendama I was deeply committed to visual art and painting studying for my undergraduate degree. That commitment to the creative in many ways brought me to footsteps of the path of kendama and it continues to grow. Not only do I teach kendama but I’m still a student. This path took me all the way to Japan and has begun for me yet another beginning with a path that stretches out.

Kendama is about people. The relationships and bonds built off this one hundred plus year old toy from Japan is the most amazing thing I’ve been a privilege to be a small part of.

My first love has always been photography. Photography lead me to painting,painting showed me kendama and kendama has reignited and guided me to block printing, portrait photography and I’m still finding new creative things to expand and share my love for kendama.

Throughout so many ups and downs through my life kendama has saved my life.

This past January Battle at the border kendama competition in Nashville was A very eye opening and confining experience with kendama and the community. If you don’t know Nashville was hit with a historical freeze that had people without power and frozen in the weekend of the competition. Kendama players from all over the world had descended onto Nashville with many staying at the kendama Depot organized D-block. Although the competition was cut short and compressed to one day going from 10am until 3am in the morning we were all there together and we took care of each other.
