Kindergarten is a wrap, flew by in a blink. Beautiful end of year Hoike at Alaka’i o Kaua’i school led by Kumu Noe, mommy was working but she made the boys’ beautiful ti leaf leis for the occasion. We had a holiday weekend full of truck bed picnics, free dive training, and picking flowers for mommy. Summer coming in hot and the boys are ready. Grown ups? Highlights from an incredible week in the Kootenays with some of my favorite people. I’m three months out from a hip replacement and a year out from an unfortunate meeting with a tree (which left me with multiple pelvic fractures and a torn rotator cuff). I was worried about the new hip holding up but my bigger concern was how deconditioned I had become after a string of injuries kept me from regular exercise for almost two years. Backcountry riding in deep snow requires an impressive level of effort even with the heli assist, falling or losing momentum in a flat or uphill pitch is the kiss of death. As a result day one was spent on shaky legs and with an anxious mind. On day two we had epic conditions and spent most of the day in mixed alpine terrain, it’s amazing what a couple of steep pitch alpine drops can do for your confidence. By the end of the day we were sampling pillow lines and bombing through the trees with abandon. I’m already looking forward to next year. Huge thanks to the whole crew @cmhkootenay especially our guides Pat, Graham, and Diana. And nobody I’d rather ride the backcountry with than @j.sessions @jill_natasha9 @loliboehler (Konky).
