My incredible father lost his battle with esophageal cancer on 7/20, a few days after his 75th birthday. To know him, was to love him and miss him already. The following text is a speech I made at a dinner in Dad's honor last month.
Despite working long hours for our family, I really admired how Dad always made time for me and my sisters. What I remember most were the special times that Dad and I would spend just the two of us. We would often go for Night Walks together. In the summertime, when bedtime was more lenient, we wouldwait for it to get dark, and then we would set out on the trail heading downtown with only the fireflies lighting our way and we would just chat as we enjoyed a summer night together. If I was feeling brave, we would walk through the cemetery and then make our way home down Harrison Street. Frequently, we would stop to go on the swings behind Frenchtown School, which made me very nervous because there was a sign on the building that very clearly stated No Trespassing After Dark. Dad taught me a few important lessons by disobeying the sign: The first was the thought exercise of “What’s the worst that can happen?”
According to Dad, the police (who he knew personally) might come and ask us to leave, and we would head home. This is an important question I’ve asked myself many times, not only when I’m about to do something illegal, but also when making a critical decision, like moving to another state without a job lined up or taking on a leadership
role.
The second lesson, is another keystone of Rick’s Rules for Life and that is “one crime at a time.” This is something Dad learned from his many years working in the newspaper business and studying the police blotter every week. The criminals who get caught are rarely doing only one illegal thing which leads to their capture. For example, if you’re going to transport drugs across state lines, make sure that your brake lights are fully functional and you’re not speeding. Or in our case, if you’re going to trespass on school grounds after dark, make sure that you’re that you are merely having a wholesome father-daughter outing and not smashing beer bottles on the ground.

The Catamount Ultra 25k was equal parts fun and muddy. My girl @1.more.fitness kept me smiling the whole time, despite almost losing my shoes to more than one mud pit. The volunteers were so kind and helpful, and a huge highlight was our sheep cheering section as we ran into the mile 9 aid station.
Training for this race with @thelyssmethod has kept me grounded during a tough season in life, and I crossed the finish line with immense gratitude for my health and fitness. Thank you to everyone who encouraged me, trained with me, or put up with my crazy schedule. I am blessed beyond measure that there are too many of you to thank. I couldn't have done it without you❤️ taken in Von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort by @mmwe

In the Summer of 2022 I was researching down ballot candidates for the state primary election and when I was reading about @charityforvt running for Attorney General I learned that she was a member of @juniorleaguechamplainvalley I had no idea what @juniorleague was, so I looked them up and learned that they are a women's leadership organization transforming their communities through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. It also just so happened that they were hosting a recruitment event the next day and it was down the street from my house, so I went and the rest is history. Over the last 3 years I have gained so many skills, friends, and logged many hours of community service. I've built beds for children in need with @shpbeds. I've made countless meals for the youth at @spectrumvt and unhoused neighbors at @anewplacevt. Helped build a house with @greenmountainhabitat. Collected winter clothing and hygiene items for @streetcatsburlington. Chopped wood to heat homes for Vermonters with @wood4goodvt. Packed meals for food insecure children around the world with @fmsc_org
JLCV is an entirely volunteer run organization and we depend on your generous donations to continue to provide these services to our local partner organizations and to develop women leaders. No donation is too small and we appreciate your support! Please click the link in my bio to donate. by @mmwe

We spent an incredible week on Mount Desert Island enjoying the quiet side of the island and exploring Acadia National Park. Highlights included a sea kayak tour in the Mount Desert Narrows with a stop on Bartlett Island. Fishing (for Steve) at Eagle Lake. Trail running and hiking (for me) at Long Pond and Bernard Mountain. A visit from @lu.lupine with a hike up Gorham mountain, a selfie at Sand Beach, and climbing over some rocks at Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse. We will definitely be back! taken in Mount Desert Island by @mmwe

After five very long years I have completed my Master of Public Administration degree. Thank you to all of my friends and family members who have listened to me complain about grad school and understood when I had to opt out of fun plans to study. Biggest thank you to my darling husband Steve for all of his support and for ordering takeout on nights when I had class. So happy to be done!! We had a fantastic day celebrating and ended the evening at @asinglepebble with Mai Tais and great food. taken in University of Vermont by @mmwe

On our fourth anniversary of home ownership we got a new floor!! It's so beautiful I can't believe it's in my house. Huge thank you to @littleawoodfloors for their impeccable work and endless patience. This has been a long time coming with a major project we had done back in 2021 to replace the joists and subfloor, a new hearth installed last year and now finally flooring. Real life is not an HGTV show where your whole house gets renovated in a week. I wish! Swipe to see the before and notice how wavy gravy the floor was. taken in Colchester, Vermont by @mmwe

Iris season was good to me this year! My bearded and Siberian irises are flourishing. They are easy to grow, low maintenance, and add a lot of drama and color to the garden. Love these special flowers. When I asked my mom @iambetsyw what I should know about growing irises she told me to pick colors I like 🤷🏼‍♀️. It's that easy! taken in Colchester, Vermont by @mmwe

All of my new dahlia tubers bloomed this year! This is my second year growing these incredible flowers and I've already ordered more to add to the garden for next season. I've enjoyed the colors in the garden and picked countless bouquets for my friends and for myself. All are from @swanislanddahlias
1/"Maniac" the largest flower in the bunch. Didn't get its first bloom until 10/14!
2/ "Mollinator" purchased for the name, but its bright pink flowers are so fun.
3/ "Gabrielle Marie" and her sunset colors
4/ "Mollinator" and "Gabrielle Marie"
5/ "Peach Fuzz" smaller but plentiful blooms that look beautiful in bouquets
6/ "Chloe Janae" The deep purple pink color is hard to capture in a photo but it is absolutely lush. taken in Colchester, Vermont by @mmwe
