more detailed documentation is on the way, for today a little impression of the exhibition as a whole 🤳💓😶‍🌫️

𝘖𝘏, 𝘈𝘙𝘌𝘕’𝘛 𝘠𝘖𝘜 𝘗𝘙𝘌𝘛𝘛𝘠, 𝘓𝘐𝘛𝘛𝘓𝘌 𝘎𝘐𝘙𝘓. examines the subtle yet persistent indoctrination of young girls* into the lifelong pursuit of being pretty. The work explores how everyday actions of care, affection and play shape what girls come to believe about themselves and their value.

Through the dialogue between the individual works, Manon Schnyder considers the mechanisms by which cuteness, beauty, and desirability are circulated in early childhood.

Her work draws attention to the dissonance between intention and impact: When does praise turn into pressure? When do unquestioned norms begin to limit freedom? When does affection turn into violence? Referencing linguist Mary M. Talbot’s [1] notion of “naturalized conventions” – social codes so embedded they appear as common sense – Schnyder invites a critical reading of the implicit messages embedded in our seemingly innocent day to day acts.
