Father o إِيمَان

I’m blessed to be the father of the flyest, most intelligent, inquisitive, artistic, fashion icon, photographer, activist, and kindest six year old. I received a lot of well wishes today from people who appreciate the experiences and values I’m helping instill in Iman and for the type of father that I am. I’m just figuring it out as I go, but I appreciate the recognition.. I use Iman as my North Star. Anytime I’m faced with a tough decision I remind myself that if Iman asks me why I made that decision in the future, I will need to able to confidently answer her. If you know Iman she will ask those tough deep questions, and she will hold you accountable. She has definitely made me a more emotionally intelligent, loving, and compassionate person.

As I pour into her, I just want her to grow up to become a well rounded individual that can navigate the contradictions and nuances of this world. I want her to understand that whatever goal she has is attainable. I try to normalize environments for her by providing her with experiences from being in corporate conference rooms to meetings with local officials advocating for community development projects to sitting in the Governors office to exploring new cities to trying new talent’s and exposing her to new taste levels. She is living the childhood that most of us wish we had but she’s so chill and humble with it.

Happy Father’s Day to all the father’s out there.. don’t be too hard on yourself, it’s not easy and we are all just figuring it out.

Eid Met Gala.. Ramadan Dump 🌙

It seems we have forgottent that we are all finding our way back home to God regardless of the path we’re taking towards Him.

The root word of “Religion” comes from the latin word “Religãre” which means “To Unite” So Religion is supposed to be about “Re-Uniting” with the Truth that is God.

There’s a tendency for religious institutions to imply that there’s a singular way for you to worship. But why do I feel most connected immersed in nature than any other place of worship with four walls? But imagine being in a forest or feeling the wind in your hair, or watching an endless ocean with seeing as much of prayer as being within a mosque or a church. While a French philosopher wrote, spirituality is about paying attention. It’s about taking notice of things around you, as opposed to just going through the motions of ritual. So what if laughter, joy and curiosity were seen as forms of worship?

Persian poet, Hafiz, who saw joy as a sacred duty, he wrote, God wants to see more laughter and playfulness in your eyes, because that is your greatest witness to him.

And I love that, because truthfully, at times, prayer can feel like an obligation, and I’m starting to learn the difference between obligation to something & being in awe of something. Does worship have to just look like submission, or can it be joy and curiosity and exploration of this beautiful world we’ve been given.

We are all just trying to figure it out..

One year ago we began a neighborhood effort to restore several blighted properties along an impaired creek that had been used as dump sites for years and became overgrown with kudzu and inaccessible. The first two photos are from one year ago and the next two are from today. We received a grant and grant coach to begin the restoration process in hopes of eventually turning these spaces into a park. Today, we had our final monthly check-in with our coach as we completed the first grant and this phase of the project. This last year we dug over 1500 kudzu rhizomes, completely clearing 2 acre of it; removed 4800 lbs of trash; cleared 124 trees of ivy; planted over 2000 native plants; had 110 unique volunteers; held community engagement events; partnered with numerous organizations; and we recently seeded 20 pounds of native seeds with 94 species selected for the various site conditions. by @mo_eazzzy

All praise to the most high, I see the grays poking out this beard but it feels like I ain’t even age. The days are going by, it’s like I’m living in a time-lapse.

If I could talk to the younger me, I’d remind him, that to make it to these heights it’s going to be a maze but it’s going to be alright. Know that god is true like the sky is still blue. All the pain that we feel will pass through, don’t stress don’t fret. The real luxuries in life are time, slow mornings, and the freedom to choose whatever you want to do. 🤲🏾🦋
