Nine

Nine years ago the world grew bright with someone who arrived just right — not just a daughter, not just small, but somehow knowing things we all spend decades trying to figure out.

You see the hurt behind the pout, the loneliness inside a crowd, the quiet truth beneath the loud. You feel the room before you speak. You find the strong inside the weak.

You make us laugh until we ache, you ask the questions that could shake a philosopher right off his seat — then dance barefoot down the street.

You are curious, you are kind, you carry galaxies in your mind, and in your chest a heart so wide the whole world fits comfortably inside.

I don't say this lightly, love — there are no words that rise above what I know to be simply true: I am alive because of you.

Not just in the way that fathers say that children make their lives okay — I mean it in the realest way there is.

So here's to nine. To you. To this. To every hug and laugh and kiss, to everything you are today, and everything you're on your way to being.
