The 6th SS Mountain Division Nord ⚡️

was a World War II mountain infantry division of the Waffen-SS, the military wing of the German Nazi Party, primarily consisting of Germans along with some Norwegian and Swiss volunteers. It was the only Waffen-SS division to operate in the Arctic Circle.

It was founded in early 1941 as the SS Battle Group Nord in southern Norway before being upgraded and renamed the SS Division Nord in preparation for Operation Barbarossa. Its original personnel came from Allgemeine-SS paramilitary units and had low combat effectiveness. In the second half of 1941 the division was effectively destroyed by the Red Army during Operation Arctic Fox, when it advanced into Soviet territory alongside the Finnish Army and the Wehrmacht. After taking massive losses in its first operation the Nord Division was entirely rebuilt starting from late 1941.

The SS Division Nord remained in Finland and northern Russia, where most of its personnel were replaced over the course of 1942 and 1943. From that point they consisted of combat veterans and graduates of the Waffen-SS mountain warfare school. With the improvement in its combat capability, the division fought off multiple Soviet attacks. It was also renamed again as the 6th SS Mountain Division Nord. After Finland signed an armistice with the Soviet Union in 1944, the Nord Division broke through lines of Soviet and Finnish troops in a fighting retreat back to Norway. It was then redeployed to the Western Front against the Western Allied invasion of Germany.

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero 🇯🇵

was a long-range, highly maneuverable carrier-based fighter operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945.

Designed by Jiro Horikoshi, the Zero prioritized extreme weight savings, granting it an exceptionally low wing loading that allowed it to out-turn almost any opposing Allied aircraft in close combat.

It featured an impressive operational range of roughly 1,900 miles, far exceeding expectations and outperforming American counterparts at the start of the war. Early models were armed with two 7.7mm machine guns and two powerful 20mm cannons 😤🇯🇵

The Fallschirmjäger 🦅⚡️

Was Nazi Germany’s elite airborne forces branch of the Luftwaffe before and during World War II. They were the first paratroopers to be committed in large-scale airborne operations. They were commanded by Kurt Student, the Luftwaffe’s second-in-command.

These soldiers were highly adaptable. Transitioning from free fall to battle-ready in a matter of minutes! I guess balls of steel and Pervetin will help with that too!

Please leave a like and comment 😊

The German Africa Corps (Afrikakorps) ⚡️⚡️

was the German expeditionary force in Africa during the North African campaign of World War II. First sent as a holding force to shore up the Italian defense of its African colonies, the formation fought on in Africa, under various appellations, from March 1941 until its surrender in May 1943. The unit’s best known commander was Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, whose reputation as one of the ablest tank commanders of the war earned him the nickname “the Desert Fox”

This footage has been remastered, huge thank you to @der.hauptmann.1 for sourcing the original footage!! Go follow if you haven’t!

The Kamikaze Special Attack Unit 🇯🇵🇯🇵

was composed of young Japanese volunteers, sometimes teenagers, filled with a deep sense of duty and nationalism.

Kamikaze aircraft were usually outdated planes stripped of non-essential equipment and loaded with explosives, effectively becoming a human guided “missile”.

Did you know, Kamikaze pilots would often return home if they were unable to find suitable targets. The image of an inevitable, one-way flight is a misconception.

On October 21st - October 25th 1944, the first Kamikaze missions took off from the Mabalacat airfield in the Philippines. Lt. Yoshiyasu Kuno was lead pilot in a 3 aircraft Zero fighter attack. They were tasked with locating and attacking any US carriers assisting in Leyte Gulf landings. Lt. Kuno stated before the flight that if he were unable to find a suitable target at sea, he would continue to Leyte Gulf and find many targets there. Later that day, only two aircraft returned. Lt. Kuno was last reported to be seen flying towards Leyte Gulf.

Over the next nine months, thousands of Kamikaze attacks would unfold. The Japanese units would experiment, change and improve their attack formations. While the United States developed the proximity fuse, which meant direct hits were no longer required on enemy aircraft.

They sunk the USS St. Lo with two direct Kamikaze hits, resulting in the loss of over 140 American sailors.

Other attacks include:
10/30/44 - USS Franklin - Struck but did not sink
10/30/44 - USS Belleau Wood - Struck but did not sink
Nov 1944- USS Intrepid - 2 strikes, but did not sink
11/25/44 - USS Essex - Struck but did not sink
Feb 1945 USS Saratoga - struck by 2 bombs and 4 Kamikaze planes
1945 USS Randolph - Kamikaze strike to flight deck, did not sink
April 1945 - USS Intrepid - struck but did not sink
07/29/45 - USS Cassin Young and USS Horace A. Bass face the last of the Kamikaze attacks.

Even though these boats did not sink, a critical strike could mean months of repairs and maintenance back at the harbor, effectively taking the boat out of commission for some time!
