We extend our deepest gratitude to Okla Jones at ESSENCE for his considered overview of the vital presence of Chicago’s Black artistic practices central to this year’s Chicago Exhibition Week (CXW).

“Chi-town has never needed much help proving the strength of its art scene, but Chicago Exhibition Week offered an unusually concentrated way to experience it,” Jones said. “Trying to experience everything would have been impossible. My time in Chicago instead became an opportunity to see several exhibitions with vastly different approaches to Black life, history and artistic practice, while getting a better understanding of the city through the spaces where the work was being presented.”

Throughout the week, Chicago’s artistic landscape emerged in its full breadth, shaped in meaningful part by the distinct perspectives and practices of Black artists and curators. From artists Lindsay Adams, Pope.L, and Karimah Ashadu to the curatorial brilliance of Hamza Walker, Jadine Collingwood, and Sarah Lewis, CXW’s programming illuminated the intellectual and creative contributions of Black artists and cultural practitioners to Chicago’s artistic identity and the cultural infrastructure that continues to nurture their work.

“That richness is such a defining part of Chicago,” described Chanelle Lacy, Head of Programming, Partnerships & Memberships at Gertie. “CXW gave us a platform to celebrate it, connect it, and bring more eyes to it.”

The Museum of Contemporary Photography and Columbia College Chicago are pleased to announce Sujata Setia as the 2026–27 recipient of the Diane Dammeyer Fellowship in Photographic Arts and Social Issues. Now in its 11th cycle, the fellowship supports socially engaged photographers in developing new work that addresses human rights and social issues through sustained engagement with communities.

Setia is an Indian-born British artist whose interdisciplinary practice combines photography, participatory methods, and material interventions to examine gender-based violence, inherited trauma, and the long-term consequences of childhood abuse. Since 2020, she has been developing A Thousand Cuts, a project exploring domestic abuse within South Asian communities through survivor testimony and collaborative image-making. Setia has worked with survivor communities through organizations including Shewise UK and WeRestart, and has received support from King’s College London and the Economic and Social Research Council for a collaborative project with women embroidery artisans in Kashmir.

During her fellowship, Setia will spend time in Chicago working with local communities as she continues to develop A Thousand Cuts, culminating in a public presentation of the work in 2027. by @mocpchi

We owe Lonnie Bunch a great debt for his service to this country, as the Secretary of the @smithsonian and founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (@nmaahc). His contributions to this project were also enormous, as he shares in his essay for the book:

“Yet his life also inspired me to be ready to fight, to confront century- old traditions and not to simply accept the racial status quo. Emmett Till’s death and his life cast a large shadow over Americaa shadow that forced the country to grapple with the darkness, the vioence, and the hatred that was as much a part of our national character as the quest for freedom and fairness.”
