Does all tea have caffeine?

No.

Does all grape juice have alcohol?

Also no.

True teas, including black, green, white and oolong, come from the Camellia sinensis plant and naturally contain caffeine, although the amount varies.

Herbal infusions are made from other plants, fruits, flowers and spices. Many are naturally caffeine-free.

But ingredients vary, so the easiest rule is also the best one:

Check the label.

Particularly if you're drinking it at 10 PM and enjoy sleeping.

Save this for the next time you're choosing an evening tea. 🌙

Meet one of our tea brand partners: @leavesofleisure. 👋

Some teas are named after faraway mountains. These are named after things like road trips, bath time and Sunday pancakes.

And we kind of love that.

Leaves of Leisure was born after founder Allie went looking for an exciting alternative to the caffeine-heavy drinks she'd relied on during years of very long workdays.

She built a collection of caffeine-conscious teas around something most of us could use a little more of: leisure.

The blends use whole herbs and botanicals, and each one is designed around a familiar moment, from a slow morning to a road trip to a bath at the end of the day.

Tea that basically gives you permission to take five.

Exactly the kind of brand we want more people to discover.

This is exactly why Model Tea & Co. exists. We don't make our own blends. We find exceptional tea makers worth discovering, then make it easier to explore different brands, flavors and styles until you find your favorites.

Which deserves its own tea: Sunday morning, road trip or bath time? 👇

No music box. No Paris. Just Anastasia and the Romanovs sharing an ordinary family moment before the empire disappeared.

Photographs preserved from the Romanovs’ private life show the imperial family during quieter moments like this one.

They ate. They talked. They gathered around tea like a family that had no idea millions of strangers would later study every face at the table.

And that enormous silver object?

It was a samovar.

The samovar heated the water. Strong tea was brewed separately, then diluted to each person’s taste.

Basically, an elaborate hot-water system with considerably better tailoring.

The photograph is powerful because it does not look like the end of an empire.

It looks normal.

That is what makes it haunting.

Aboard Titanic, first-class tea belonged to the spaces between meals.

You might choose the First-Class Lounge, with its carved oak walls, deep chairs and marble fireplace.

Or the Verandah Café, where wicker furniture, potted palms and ivy-covered trellises created the strange illusion of a garden overlooking the Atlantic.

A steward brought tea and light refreshments.

The exact menu has not survived, which is slightly rude of history.

This was not primarily about hunger.

It was an elegant pause between the afternoon promenade and dressing for dinner. A place to make introductions, continue conversations and be visible to the right people.

The real luxury was not simply what arrived on the tray.

It was having an afternoon spacious enough to stop for it.

But these weren’t gold.
They were tea bricks.

In parts of Tibet, Mongolia and Siberia, compressed tea bricks didn’t just have trade value. They functioned as money.

People priced goods in them, paid workers with them and broke the scored bricks into smaller pieces for everyday purchases.
Basically, cash.

One nineteenth-century account priced a horse at 20 packets of tea, with four bricks in each packet. That’s approximately 80 tea bricks.

Their value depended on the tea’s quality and how far it had traveled. But this was far more organized than an occasional barter.

Spend it. Save it. Or steep it.

There are plenty of ways to brew loose-leaf tea, but our vote for beginners is a roomy basket infuser.

Why?

Tea leaves expand when they get wet.

Giving them room allows water to circulate around the leaves instead of packing everything tightly together.

Tea balls can work, especially for smaller-leaf teas.

But stuffing a bunch of beautiful whole leaves into a tiny tea ball is basically tea economy class.

Mug. Basket. Tea. Water.

Done.

What's your favorite way to brew loose leaf?

It was called Tea.

On April 14, 1912, Titanic’s third-class menu listed four meals: Breakfast. Dinner. Tea. Supper.
And “Tea” was very much a meal.

Cold meat, cheese, pickles, fresh bread and butter, stewed figs and rice were all on the menu. Tea, the drink, came with it.

This wasn’t some White Star Line invention.

In Britain and Ireland, tea could mean the meal itself, particularly a later meal where tea was served alongside substantial food. The word didn’t necessarily mean someone was putting the kettle on.

Which makes the surviving Titanic menu a fascinating little snapshot of language we still use, but don’t always mean in quite the same way.

And then there’s Supper, because apparently three meals plus Tea still left room for gruel, cabin biscuits and cheese.

But what did tea look like in first class?

Loose-leaf tea requires surprisingly little equipment.

You need:

☕ A mug
💧 Hot water
🍃 Tea
🫖 Something that lets you remove the leaves

That's basically it.

A basket infuser is fantastic because it gives the leaves plenty of room to expand, but you do not need an elaborate setup to make excellent tea.

Start simple.

You can become a person with an entire cabinet of tea equipment later.

Ask me how I know.

Save this for the next person who tells you loose leaf is "too complicated."
