We are pleased to invite you to the show „Sweetbitter“ by Latvian artist Sabine Vernere opening on Wednesday, October 7, 5pm.

Curated by Megija Milberga.

Sabīne Vernere (b. 1990, Latvia) is a Latvian artist based in Riga. Working primarily in Indian ink, she creates expressive paintings populated by anthropomorphic, gender-fluid beings. Her practice brings together sensuality with elements of disturbance and violence, exploring the complex and often ambivalent relationships between humans and the natural world.

Vernere holds a doctorate in Visual Art and Design from the Art Academy of Latvia (2025), where she also received her Master’s degree (2018) and Bachelor’s degree (2016) from the Department of Painting. She has furthered her studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. by @modernanimals__

In an almost brutalist gesture, Jodi Biggs forces enormous quantities of oil paint onto his support. Layer upon layer, the paint builds into something close to sculpture, a surface that recalls the work of Frank Auerbach. By deliberately refusing refinement, Biggs sets out, in a sense, not to paint anything beautiful. The motif could hardly be more conventional: two red flowers in a white vase on a table, set against a dark ground. Yet he treats it with near hostility. The vase is a churned mass of white, the table a knotted brown crust, the background a black, blistered skin. The flowers seem less painted than squeezed out, their red coiling like something wet and alive, which is perhaps where the title comes from. And still, beauty happens. It arrives against the painting’s own will, all the more convincing for having been resisted. As if to push the point further, Biggs sets the work in an absurdly deep frame of heavy oak, turning a small still life into an object, almost a reliquary. A disarmingly beautiful work. It’s part of the group show Cosmogram. @jodiworking taken in Zürich, Switzerland by @modernanimals__

„Schönes Blau, in dem die Pfauen spazieren und sich verneigen,
Blau der Fernen, der Zonen des Glücks mit den Wettern für mein Gefühl,
Blauer Zufall am Horizont! Und meine begeisterten Augen
Weiten sich wieder und blinken und brennen sich wund.“

A cosmogram is not a picture of the world but a thing that holds a world together and sets it working. The term belongs to the historian of science John Tresch, who used it for objects — a temple, an atlas, an astronomical clock — that do not merely represent a cosmos but enact one, gathering a whole order of being into a single made thing.
What separates a genuine cosmogram from a picture that merely invites a clever reading is resistance. A real work pushes back. It tells the viewer things they did not put there and refuses to close neatly around any single interpretation. The paintings gathered in this show are the ones that argue — that hold to material specificity and conviction rather than performing the mood of their moment, that construct a world, however small or quiet, rather than reflecting one back.

Alix Philippe paints from personal memory — photographs, Posca pen sketches, and plein air oils made while travelling. She works in layers, shifting between techniques within a single canvas, so the landscapes arrive fragmented and lit from somewhere unspecified. The paintings sit between abstraction and figuration. They suggest a place without naming it, and hold to the question of what it means to belong somewhere. @alixphilippeartist by @modernanimals__
