The largest toothed predator on this planet.

Sperm whales are some of the most mysterious and fascinating animals in our oceans. Growing up to 60 feet long and diving more than 7,000 feet beneath the ocean’s surface in search of giant squid. Their massive heads contain the largest brain of any animal ever known to exist, weighing up to 20 pounds.

These incredible whales can hold their breath for over an hour and communicate using powerful clicking sounds. Despite their size and deep diving abilities, sperm whales are highly social animals that live in close family groups.

Moments from one of my favorite ocean encounters ever with this momma and her calf.

Momma let her baby, who was probably born not too long ago in these waters, hang out and play around with us. He continuously swam around us, splashing and making close passes, while mom hung out on the reef below and rested.

Check out the 4th slide of Momma nudging him toward the surface so he wouldn’t forget to breathe!

Effortless movement through the blue.

The largest fish on Earth, whale sharks are known to reach over 40 feet in length, with the largest recorded individual measuring 61 feet! Despite their immense size, they feed almost entirely on plankton and other tiny organisms by filter feeding. Every year, they migrate through the nutrient-rich waters of the Sea of Cortez and if you’re lucky you may get a chance to spot them on their journey.

First day. First drop.

This little guy decided to come check us out right when we jumped in. Couldn’t have asked for a better start to the trip!

Humpback whales migrate to warm waters each year to mate and give birth. Before the journey, they pack on a thick layer of blubber, which becomes their energy source during migration and their stay in these breeding grounds.

While in warmer waters, humpbacks eat little to nothing for months (sometimes up to half a year) living entirely off their blubber reserves.

Mother humpbacks nurse their calves during this time, producing up to around 100 gallons of rich milk per day! The calf stays with its mother for about a year, learning essential survival skills before heading out on its own.
