Photoalbum (non-adhesive) bound in cactusleather with brass wire :
For some time now, I have been working with leather alternatives such as apple leather, textile paper, pineapple fibers (Piñatex), cactus leather, various types of cloth. This book is a flexible cover with cactus leather sewed onto brass wires. The brass wire on the front and back shows the course of the Msunduzi River in Pietermaritzburg. The book shape symbolizes a prison, the brass wires prison bars. The river mimics freedom and shows the beauty of Pietermaritzburg, which is shaken by unemployment and poverty. During my stay, I sensed remnants of apartheid but as well a time of upcoming changes.
