"Dear Big Sister"

To the oldest girl:

Growing up, I didn’t realize the weight you carried; the responsibility, the pressure, the way you stepped into roles of adults. You led/taught us, protected us, and held our little world together with a strength I can see clearly now.

As sisters we fought, had our moments. I remember one day, as a child, I was upset with you and I tried to cut you out of this picture. But, I stopped halfway like something in me already knew I could NEVER. Our bond was bigger than the moment.

Painting the same photo with the tear being mended, feels like stitching together the things I didn’t understand before. It feels like saying, "I see you". I see the girl who had to grow up fast. I see the sister who carried more than she ever should have. I see the love behind the lessons, the patience behind the firmness, the softness you didn’t always get to show.

Thank you for being the one who stood in the gap.
Thank you for being someone I got to witness and be inspired by. I am, because you are. You are literally the reason I wanted to be an artist!

To all 3 of my sisters:
Thank you for being my first friends, even when I didn’t always know how to be yours. I love you in ways I’m still learning to express. by @moesarte

"Your Cheetah Girls"

In remembrance of my Great Aunt Alva and one of my favorite childhood memories with two of my sisters.

We had a "night out of town": My sisters and I were sitting in the dining/living room of the old house. Our aunt Alva walked in, wearing her cheetah print hat. She called out to her Cheetah Girls. As always, we were excited to see her. She wanted to take us out for pizza in New York, at least that is what we told everyone else when we came back lol. She even took a photo of us walking up the train station stairs, pretending to be on the next train to NYC. In reality, we went downtown to our favorite spots. We danced. We laughed. I like to cherish these moments because we didn't get to see her too often but when we did she was able to bring so much light and energy to a space.

My sisters are the biggest part of my childhood. I couldn't imagine it without them. I am so thankful to have shared such a closeness and memories I get to hold onto to. Through the good and the bad fr. by @moesarte

"Birthday Blues" 2025

I celebrated my birthday earlier in the month. And almost every year, since I was a kid, I usually am overcome by the "blues". I think it's hard for me to get out of my head sometimes.

This piece is the start of a series of reimagined childhood memories. I look forward to what comes from this process as I continue to build this project. It is personal to me. I want to find healing in the process & pay homage to my younger self + my loved ones.

Took me over the course of 3 months to complete. Began this piece early October.

From starting college at 18 to graduating at 26, I'm happy to say I received my BA in Art Therapy.

I am one of many to be the last graduating class of New Jersey City University.

Currently jogging to my Masters degree 🫡

Photos I've taken on 35 mm film, over the course of the semester.

The goal for me, was to find things that seemed like they had a story. I managed to find a lot of burned and abandoned/neglected subjects. I also did a lot of exploring to make it all come together. I felt like maybe I was a journalist in a past life lol.

The house + cat being my personal favorite.
📖 A local family's home caught fire causing them to relocate. Unfortunately with the uproot of their lives, their cat had to stay behind. Tiny, stays close to the house as that is where she is most familiar. Sometimes she seeks shelter under burnt parts of the home. She is still outside for now. I hope she gets warm soon.

I really enjoyed getting back into photography and learning all about the dark room part of it. This was my first time learning to develop film and process prints in the darkroom. And it was so much fun.

Untitled Photograms 1 & 2 (camera-less photography)

Yesterday's class we learned how to make photograms. I went into this process with no clear intentions or direction of how I wanted it to look.

But I intentionally brought in a pair of glasses, a comb and some jewelry I've obtained from my grandmother.
I really wanted to see how it would fit all together. I like how I managed to make a face out of what I had which I try to do often with "found object" type of projects.

I genuinely enjoy the process of making art, learning a new form/medium and being met with an outcome that is exceptional. It really satisfies something in me. It truly is healing.

Can you tell I'm not a ceramist?

I'm not sure the exact reason why this happened (I have an idea) but... maybe I should've paid closer attention when learning about glaze.

Mind you all my final plates came out this way. IM SAD! It was my first time making plates/throwing on the wheel.

My last ceramics course was about 5 years ago 😮‍💨, I had no idea what to expect from the semester.

"Until we're all free"

How do systems of power determine who is
"wanted" or "exploitable," and why?

In this piece, I wanted to highlight how marginalized people particularly in, but not limited to, Sudan, DRC, and Palestine, are targeted for their land, ethnicity, and/or resources.

These issues may seem distant, but the same systems that exploit, dehumanize, and oppress them also threaten the humanity in all of us.

Think about our country's history, power systems, similar lived experiences and who benefits from our suffering.

The "Wanted" poster is a deliberate choice. I wanted to reclaim a symbol, usually one of persecution, and turn it into a declaration of resistance.

The figure is not a single person but the people of DRC, Palestine, and Sudan. It is me. It is all of us. It is a collective representation of lives disrupted by imperialism, racism, greed+.

The faces I have collaged, tell stories of displacement, struggle, and survival, which is a reminder that these are not abstract issues but lived realities everyday.

The "reward" should be an important reminder of what may be lost (our morality, our empathy, our humanity) when we are committed to turning a blind eye to these injustices. What does it say about humanity when suffering like this is normalized or ignored?

Last year, I had the opportunity to take a class, that helped me bridge sociopolitical issues with my art, using self as a tool. I don't usually make politically charged work. It's something that made me anxious, particularly to share. Merely because of not knowing how to go about it. But I did some work studying artists, during the semester which helped me make work that spoke on or brought awareness to the injustices experienced by marginalized groups. This is meant as a reminder to not turn a blind eye. In this class, I primarily focused on issues surrounding the black experience and identity. But this piece, "Until we are all free" is my way of expressing interconnectedness. by @moesarte
