MoES–AcSIR MoU for Advancing Research in Earth Sciences

The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) and the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) signed an MoU to strengthen scientific collaboration and doctoral research. The MoU was signed by Dr. Praveen Kumar D., Scientist-G and Mission Director, Mission Mausam, on behalf of MoES, and Prof. Manoj Kumar Dhar, Director, AcSIR. It was formally declared during a meeting chaired by Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary, MoES, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.

All ten MoES institutes are now recognised as AcSIR Associated Research Institutes (AcSIR-ARIs) and are participating in AcSIR’s latest Call for PhD Enrolment. The collaboration will enable PhD scholars to undertake research at MoES institutes, promote interdisciplinary scientific inquiry by utilizing shared resources of world class standards.

It is a significant step towards addressing emerging challenges in Earth Sciences and advancing India’s scientific progress.

Under the chairmanship of Dr. Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences (@moesgoi), a meeting of the National Steering Committee (NSC) on the Borehole Geophysics Research Laboratory (BGRL) was convened at Prithvi Bhavan, MoES, New Delhi, on October 13, 2026.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the Scientific Deep Drilling Programme in the Koyna Intraplate Seismic Zone, Maharashtra, and discussed plans for advancing its Main Phase.

Key discussions focused on scientific deep drilling to a proposed depth of approximately 6 km, the establishment of a Deep Borehole Observatory for long-term monitoring of subsurface conditions and seismic activity, and strengthening research on reservoir-triggered earthquakes and fault-zone processes.

The Committee also deliberated on implementation priorities, including administrative and financial mechanisms, international scientific cooperation with the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), and data-sharing and management policies.

The meeting emphasised coordinated efforts, effective implementation and scientific collaboration to advance earthquake research, improve understanding of seismic processes, and strengthen India’s capabilities in deep Earth sciences.
