Umar Khalid was primarily arrested based on a speech he delivered in Amravati, Maharashtra, on February 17, 2020. The Delhi Police alleged that this speech was part of a "larger conspiracy" behind the 2020 North-East Delhi riots. The following are key points related to his speech and imprisonment: Location and Context of the Speech: The speech was delivered in Amravati during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Police Allegations: The police claimed that Khalid, through his speech, incited people and conspired to instigate riots during US President Donald Trump's visit to India. He was charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Court's Observations: The Delhi High Court, during a hearing, described the speech as "inciteful" and "obnoxious." However, Khalid's lawyers argued that he spoke of Gandhian non-violence and love in his speech and used the word "Inquilab" (revolution) in the context of democratic protest. Current Status (2026): On January 5, 2026, the Supreme Court of India once again rejected his bail application, meaning he will remain in Tihar Jail. The court observed that the allegations against him appeared prima facie true. Umar Khalid has been in jail since September 2020, and by the beginning of 2026, he had spent approximately 2000 days in prison #politics #newsupdate #viral #umarkhalid #indian by @mohammad_zaid1_

A former JNU scholar who first made national headlines during the 2016 JNU controversy, sharjeel was later arrested under UAPA in the larger conspiracy case linked to the 2020 Delhi riots. Investigators allege that speeches, protest planning, meetings and coordination among activists formed part of a conspiracy that culminated in the riots. Khalid has denied all allegations, maintaining that he advocated peaceful democratic protest and was not involved in any violence. Multiple courts have denied him bail, citing a prima facie case under UAPA. Yet, after years in Tihar Jail, he remains an undertrial and has not been convicted. To some, he symbolizes dissent. To others, he is an accused facing serious charges. The trial continues, and the final verdict is still awaited. Dissenter or conspirator? India's courts are still deciding.
