Interviewing Wael al-Dahdouh was one of the most difficult conversations & interviews I have ever had to navigate.

The man who lost so much, sacrificed so much, and yet remains steadfast. A believer in his mission and in the profession he so clearly loves.

“Every journalist should carry a humanitarian mission,” he said to me during our chat.

Israel targeted and killed his wife, three of his children, a grandson, and so many other relatives. Not to mention his colleagues, many of which he personally mentored.

And yet, despite the emotional and psychological weight he carries, there he was, speaking about his experience and the experience of all Palestinian journalists with the highest levels of professionalism and integrity. Surely this is why he is so rightfully named the mountain of Gaza.

It was my privilege and honour to sit down and speak with Wael al-Dahdouh, the Al Jazeera Gaza bureau chief who saw so much, endured so much..

..and yet is fully committed to ensuring that the coverage continues.

The Real Talk interview with Wael al-Dahdouh is now up.

In this week’s episode of Real Talk, Avi Shlaim, a celebrated historian on Israel-Palestine sits down with Mohamed Hashem to speak about his life story, growing up as an Arab Jew inside Israel, his journey from Zionist to ‘fierce’ anti-Zionism, and why he now believes the two-state solution was never even born.

At the age of five, Shlaim and his family moved to Israel, where he felt he was treated as a second-class Israeli due to his Arab background. by @mohhashem

A side to Avi Shlaim you haven’t seen. This has been one of the most endearing conversations with Avi Shlaim, one of the world’s most celebrated historians on Isrl-P@l, who was born to an Iraqi Jewish family in Baghdad.

This is us sharing some tahini and date syrup, a popular snack and dessert across the Arab world. Link in bio 🔗

A moment from my conversation with Eyal Weizman, the founder of Forensic Architecture, that’s one of the world’s leading research agencies investigating human rights violations and state violence around the world.

Our conversation was quite deep, and really delved into the questions of identity and privilege, as Eyal put it.

I’m still sitting & thinking about my convo with Eyal Weizman, which came out this week. We really got into his identity as an Israeli..he calls it a burden.. and he said something I hadn’t heard framed quite this way before: using his own privilege in order to end that privilege itself.

One of the most personal conversations I’ve had.

Do have a watch, it’s out on YouTube now! Also link in bio 📺 by @mohhashem

In this weeks episode of Real Talk, Eyal Weizman, a leading architect, author, and the founder of Forensic Architecture, whose evidence has fed directly into South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the ICJ, sits down with Mohamed Hashem about the founding of Forensic Architecture, the argument at the heart of his new book, and how he holds all of it against his own Israeli identity.

His new book, Ungrounding, traces the destruction of Gaza back to the Nakba of 1948 and argues that what’s happening there today isn’t a rupture, but a continuation of decades of dispossession.
