💀🧙🏼@assinchaircollective is rolling into October with our usual weekly meet-ups! We meet Mondays from 12-1 EST on zoom. Come hang with us and make your art alone/together with the weirdest, warmest bunch of creative humans on the block! And bring a friend! 💀🧙🏼

🎉Our monthly FREE session is Oct 19th, so bring a friend who might need some good vibes and community to get going on their project again!  🎉

🪄Plus, we have TWO exciting bonuses this month for paid community members: Christina Rivera (@christinarivera.writer ) will be our Guest Host on Oct 26th! First, Christina Rivera is a Pushcart Prize–winning essayist whose debut, MY OCEANS (Curbstone Books, 2025), won the Silver Nautilus and Gold IPNE Book Awards. Her work has appeared in Orion, The Kenyon Review, The Cut, Terrain.org, HuffPost, and elsewhere. She will be sharing about the craft of her work-in-progress, THE RIB: (A Short *Magical* Story Letter Club) Exhuming & Rewilding missing POVs of the bible. Her work is so cool and is sure to set off sparklers in your brain for your own project. 🪄

📅Aaaand, our Fall Daily Creative Challenge runs from Mon, Oct 12th- Mon, Oct 26th! If you want to commit to doing small creative acts each day with community support, this is a low-key way to do it! Here’s how it works: I’ll share a daily prompt via email in the morning, and everyone on the thread checks in in big ways and small throughout the day, from a finished poem to a little thumbs up to say you did your thing on your own. It’s a great accountability booster with plenty of inspiration! If you’d like to join, sign up at the link in the post! 📅

Thank you @nelle_journal @lauren.slaughter.writes @meribear6 @findmycure @ashortnomad for giving my poems such an amazing home!! Honored to share these pages with so many writers whose work I love ❤️ and yes, some dude asked me the question in the title of the first poem after a reading. 🤯😤

Sharing this, too, from an interview I did for Two Sylvias Press about this poem...."The seed of this poem was planted by a poem I love by Nancy Krygowski, “How Old Are You?” from her book, The Woman in the Corner (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2020). Her poem answers the question posed in the title, but from an angle. I felt a thrill when I read it. I used her poem as a prompt for my Madwomen in the Attic writing students and tried it myself, and voila! a memory returned. Years ago, some guy came up to me after a reading and asked me this question—“Are all your poems about your kids?”—after I’d read a number of poems, some of which included my kids. At the time, I couldn’t think of a snappy comeback—my body just went cold, I changed the subject, then left to talk with someone else. But his comment continued filling me with rage, and I kept ruminating about how I wish I would have answered. Nancy’s poem helped me realize I didn’t even need to come up with some brilliant “answer.” I could write a poem instead, one that would come closer to articulating a true response." by @mohnslate

Let me know if you have any questions. Look forward to all we will make this October!

I wrote about realizing my book manuscripts have become fossilized, and how I’m trying to fall in love with them and their weird, beloved quirks again ✨ How I’m trying to make our relationship feel alive again — with thanks to @codycookparrott who asked us, “Which projects feel alive to you right now?” I was ready to make a long list. But my answer was actually: “neither.” At first, it felt depressing to admit this. Then, it felt like the biggest a-ha moment I’ve had in a long time.

If you’ve lost the spark with your creative project and want to do some work together rekindling the spark, come to my workshop on Tues, Oct 20th from 1-2:30 pm EST on zoom! I’ll share a few strategies and ideas, and we’ll dive into our projects with some generative writing, some reflective writing, and discussion as well. We’ll help each other find our way forward, at whatever stage of our projects we’re in at the moment. I’ll share the recording & prompts afterward if you can’t make it!

And, if you’re someone who’s craving a daily kick in the pants to get going again in community, Sign up for our Daily Creative Challenge! 💥 It will run from Mon, Oct 12th- Mon, Oct 26th. You’ll get the first prompt in your inbox early in the morning of Mon, Oct 12th. Sign up at Be Where You Are to build your daily creative practice with us!

This workshop and the daily challenge are for paid subscribers of Be Where You Are &/or @assinchaircollective . If you feel that you would benefit from these offerings and you can’t pay to subscribe right now, just email me and we’ll work it out. ✨ Link in story & bio 💥 Or, comment “LOVE” and I’ll send you the link! 🔗 by @mohnslate

Meet Maya! Thanks to @pawsacrosspittsburgh and Cristie, Maya’s foster parent, for bringing her into our lives. She’s doing an excellent job tracking every bunny and squirrel in Point Breeze and being a total goofball. We love her so much already. ❤️ by @mohnslate

✨✨✨
Paul Robeson

That time
we all heard it,
cool and clear,
cutting across the hot grit of the day.
The major Voice.
The adult Voice
forgoing Rolling River,
forgoing tearful tale of bale and barge
and other symptoms of an old despond.
Warning, in music-words
devout and large,
that we are each other’s
harvest:
we are each other’s
business:
we are each other’s
magnitude and bond.

✨new beginner’s mind interview up today with Iranian-American poet, translator, and psychotherapist Leila Farjami (@leila_poetry) on returning to the body, creating the inner space to listen, and letting our wounds become places of transformation ✨

⚡Click through for some gems and you can read the whole thing at Be Where You Are ⚡

📚Order your copy of Leila’s new poetry collection, DAUGHTER OF SALT, (@triohousepress), from anywhere books are sold (but please make it your favorite independent bookstore)! 📚

Sarah Ghazal Ali (@caesarah) says of DAUGHTER OF SALT, “In this sharp-tongued, crystalline debut, Leila Farjami traces, mourns, and remakes an inheritance of womanhood waterlogged with duty and self-erosion. Mythic and matrilineal in scope, Daughter of Salt plumbs the secrets of sand and sea, mother and daughter, nation and body.”

💬 Leave a comment and I’ll message you the link to the interview! 💬

Hi, friends! I’ve just settled in back home in Pittsburgh after two years in Los Angeles. Somewhere in my cross-country move, Be Where You Are turned three years old (an unruly preschooler!) I’ve been spending time thinking about this newsletter & community and what it has grown into in that time, as well as what I’m hoping it will become.I just published the revised “About Page” for this newsletter as a re-introduction to what Be Where You Are is all about.

And, because this space is a collective one, I’d love to have your perspective in our very first Reader Survey! I’ve been dreaming up some new workshops and offerings, but before I make decisions, I want to know what YOU need right now in your creative life and your mindfulness practices and the intersections between. It’s just a few questions and should only take five minutes. Read through and then share your thoughts in the survey at the end. Aaand, if you’d like to jump right into the survey now, go for it!Link in bio 🔗💥 Reach out anytime with questions or if you’d really benefit from a paid subscription but can’t afford it right now and we’ll make it happen 🙌🏼✨ by @mohnslate

Thank you to the editors @swwimmiami for giving this poem a home. These lines came to me in pieces a year or two ago as I was trying to name what it is to parent two tweens and be in the Before times of so much change to come —and in the midst of all we don’t know of the future ❤️ also happy I managed to sneak in our awkward puberty joke that the kids hate 😅 You can hear me read it to you at the link in my bio 🔗 by @mohnslate
