Announcing the second printing of LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY: MENTOR TO MODERNISM

Two volumes, a lifetime of research. Lloyd C. Engelbrecht’s biography of Moholy-Nagy is the most comprehensive study of his life, covering everything he touched -painting, photography, film, sculpture stage and exhibition design, and his pedagogy - and draws on extensive conversations with the artist’s daughter, Hattula Moholy-Nagy.

After years of being out of print, The Moholy-Nagy Foundation and Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König with the generous contribution of Pentagram design studio have brought these volumes back to life again - the reprint was the dream of the late Hattula Moholy-Nagy, and we are proud to have carried it through.

PART 2 is finally here! Listen now on bauhausfaces.com!

This second part of the bauhaus faces episode follows Moholy first to the Netherlands, then to England, and finally to Chicago, where he became director of the New Bauhaus and explores Moholy not only as a former Bauhaus master, but as an artist, educator, and thinker whose ideas helped bring Bauhaus principles into a new international context. At the centre of Moholy’s work remained a profound interest in light, movement, space, new materials, and human perception.

Once again, Moholy’s grandsons @_daniel_hug and Andreas, together with the Canadian art historian @olibotar , guide us through his life, work, and legacy.

Self Portrait, 1920s

#selfportrait #moholynagy @moholynagyfoundation by @moholynagyfoundation

In 1924, Oskar Schlemmer, László Moholy-Nagy, and Farkas Molnár published Die Bühne im Bauhaus (The Stage at the Bauhaus), the fourth volume in the school’s landmark book series. Theater, they argued, was where a new world could be rehearsed: the body reduced to geometry, movement plotted like a musical score, the human figure remade as pure form.

Schlemmer designed the cover. Moholy-Nagy laid out the pages. Between them, a book about performance became a performance itself — design not as decoration, but as a method for building the world it pictures.

On view in Some Particular Heaven: Ideas of Utopia in the BAMPFA Collection, a yearlong exhibition that gathers works spanning centuries and continents — Buddhist hanging scrolls, fifteenth-century painting, contemporary installation — around a shared question: how does art help us imagine a future in which all can thrive? One of its four thematic groupings takes up design as a method for realizing utopian visions. This is where the Bauhaus enters.

Opens tomorrow, August 5 @bampfa

Salgo Trust's Important Moholy-Nagy "Architecture 1", 1920-21 @nemzetigaleria (Hungarian National Gallery), Budapest

Early in 2018 one of The Salgo Trust’s most important works of art was donated to the Hungarian National Gallery, a part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. It was felt that this work, with one of László Moholy-Nagy’s earliest Constructivist works on the recto and a lost late Dada work on the verso, belonged in the collection of the National Gallery not only because the Gallery lacked a painting by this Hungarian artist, but also because at the time that the work was made and re-made around 1920-21, Moholy-Nagy was in Berlin, and in close contact with other Hungarian avant-garde figures such as Lajos Kassák, Ernő Kállai, Alfréd Kemény, László Péri and Béla Uitz. The work is now on permanent display among other works by members of the Hungarian avant-garde.

LÁSZLÓ MOHOLY-NAGY: Artist of the Future PART 1
with Daniel and Andreas Hug & Oliver Botar

🎧 Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcast or YouTube

László Moholy-Nagy is often associated above all with photography and the New Vision. Yet his work reaches far beyond this field. He was one of the great multimedia artists of the twentieth century — working with painting, photography, film, typography, stage design, and sculpture.

At the centre of Moholy’s practice was a profound interest in education. He did not see art as something separate from life. His work explored how art could mediate between new technology and human experience — and how it might teach us to see, think, and live differently.

This episode of bauhaus faces explores Moholy not only as the artist of the New Vision, but as an artist, educator, and thinker whose ideas helped shape modern visual culture.

Because Moholy’s work is so vast and varied, this story will be told in two parts. Part 1 focuses on his family background, his path toward becoming an artist, his Bauhaus years, and his later period in Berlin. Part 2 follows him to the Netherlands, England, and finally Chicago, where he became director of the New Bauhaus and helped bring Bauhaus ideas into an international conversation about art, design, technology, and education.

The episode features conversations with Moholy’s grandsons, Daniel and Andreas Hug, and with the Canadian art historian Oliver Botar. A bonus episode will accompany both parts, in which all three interview partners discuss selected works by Moholy — tracing his development from a young, self-taught painter to an internationally renowned artist and educator.

What is an image when it exists beyond human sight? 👁️

László Moholy-Nagy believed photography was an indifferent vision — detached from human affects, a mechanical gaze uncoupled from feeling. A century later, that idea feels startlingly prescient.

Curator and researcher Antonio Somaini, whose deep fascination with Moholy-Nagy runs through his work, draws a direct line from the Bauhaus master to today’s machine vision and AI image generation. In a new interview with Kunstkritikk Nordic Art Review, Somaini describes how reading Trevor Paglen’s essay on “invisible images” sent him back to Moholy-Nagy, Dziga Vertov’s Kino-Eye, and Walter Benjamin’s optical unconscious — realising that the non-human gaze AI produces has a long and complex prehistory.

“If we want to understand how machine vision works, we need to unlearn how to see like humans.” — Trevor Paglen, as quoted by Somaini

For Somaini, Moholy-Nagy’s radical repositioning of vision is not a historical footnote but a key to unlocking what AI is doing to culture right now. His exhibition The World Through AI at the Jeu de Paume traced exactly this genealogy — and the show is now travelling to Frankfurt and São Paulo.

The question Moholy-Nagy opened, and Somaini keeps asking: what counts as an image at all?

A hundred years apart, two visionary works invite us to see the world anew. In 1925, László Moholy-Nagy’s film scenario Dynamic of the Metropolis exploded the boundaries of art and design, using fragmented skyscrapers, kinetic speed lines, and rhythmic photomontage to capture the pulse of modernity. His avant-garde mapping of urban life was a call to perceive the city as a living, shifting network—a “vital association of events in space and time.”
Fast forward to 2023: Kate Crawford & Vladan Joler’s Calculating Empires unfurls a monumental, hand-drawn map at Fondazione Prada, tracing five centuries of technology, empire, and resistance. Their intricate diagrams reveal how today’s AI and tech giants echo the power structures of the past, mapping the “informatics of domination” through dense webs of communication, computation, and control.
Both works are more than visual spectacles—they are acts of critique. Moholy-Nagy’s modernist city and Crawford & Joler’s genealogies of power invite us to question: how do the systems that shape our attention, perception, and autonomy evolve? What does it mean to map the forces—visible and invisible—that govern our lives?
