Hands down the best part of yesterday was vending with my cousin and her daughter. She’s the last of the grands and I am extremely proud of her!

She makes the best body butters @thesolarskinco and they smell amazing. Boujee is my fave but you’ll have to find your own. Go support my girl!

Author PSA on a Friday

🚨 Experts are finally ringing the same alarm educators have been for years. What are they saying, you ask??

📖 There is a literacy crisis in the United States and it’s only getting worse. From young readers to adults, the number of literate and proficient readers is at an all time low. College professors are also alarmed at the number of unprepared students due to reading challenges.

🤷🏾‍♀️What happened? Covid? Increased screen time? Removal of explicit phonics instruction from state standards👀? The list could go on forever. Playing the blame game at this juncture is counterproductive. Our children can’t or are struggling to read. Yes, Black and Brown children are struggling the most. We are at the stage of: ACTION REQUIRED.

💡 What now? Most states have implemented an approach known as the “science of reading”. This ensures all teachers are explicitly implementing phonics instruction in the classroom among other practices.

🧑🏾‍💻👩🏾‍💻Authors will continue writing books. If you have a book or story on your heart, then we encourage you to get it out and share it with the world! Also, support your local authors however that looks for you.

📚Parents, have your child read daily. The exact time depends on their age. Also, let them read the fun stuff sometimes. You know - comics, graphic novels, stories about boogers, farts, and hairy warts. That’s practice for the non-fun reading material. Lastly, be an example. Read your chosen book alongside them.

🧯We don’t have to force children to be passionate about reading. Not everyone loves math and that’s ok, right? The same is true for reading. They don't have to love it. We do need to ensure they have the foundational skills and tools necessary to be literate functioning beings. We owe that to them. by @moinkpub

The last gratitude post has to be for my fellow authors at the event. It is very inspiring and motivating to be in a room with like-minded people. It was great to meet and network with each one.

💡Remember to ask an author the ‘Why’ behind their book. I’m almost positive it will be a moving and powerful story.

Midweek Flashback: Saturday was truly a lovely day at the Inaugural Map of Writers: Local Authors’ Celebration. As authors, our first goal is to always promote the importance of literacy whether you are 1 or 101. This event accomplished that goal and more.

🙏🏾 Much gratitude to @jacobs_amplified for sponsoring the event and collaborating with the Fairburn Library.

✨ Christine, thank you for your vision and leadership. It was definitely seen and felt from beginning to end. Please keep being a light and presence in this space. You are appreciated and valued. Also, thank you for the free lunch🥰😋 Authors, you know we are rarely fed at events! You did your big one, sis!

🗣️Higlights: Meeting community members, talking about Madison, sharing my writing journey and networking with other authors

Allow me to flood your timeline with a couple more gratitude posts from this special event.

🗣️Calling all Endo Warriors and supporters to the front! It’s March 1st so that means it’s Endometriosis Awareness Month🎗️

While this disease can impact all women, Black women are frequently under-diagnosed and under-treated due to systemic racism, implicit bias, and the misconception that it is a “white woman’s disease”. On average, Black women are diagnosed at ages 2.6 years older than white women. This must change!

Our author, Moniquea, will be sharing her own personal journey this month. We invite you to join along with her to better understand how this disease, very likely present at birth, can impact women’s lives.

We’ll see you over there! 🔗 n👋🏾oh 👆🏾👆🏾

Reflecting back on the Inaugural Literacy Festival held at the Gladys S. Dennard Library a week ago. Although it rained, the community showed up and supported the youth in a big way!

It was an honor and privilege to be invited to join such a wonderful event led by the South Fulton Teen Advisory Board and Arrow Youth Leadership Council International. To see young authors and teens leading the event, reminded us of why we do what we do.

A special thanks to Mrs. Katrina Watson, Branch Manager at Gladys. She works hard for and is dedicated to the community of South Fulton. We can’t wait to return for the next children’s literacy event 📚.

Sending special thanks to @scbwi_sobreeze region for the opportunity to be part of the Pathways to Publication Kidlit panel. It was the perfect way to end our first year of events!

@mandyfletcherwrites and @michellekennedy , great job on facilitating and organizing the event.
It was truly a pleasure to speak with aspiring authors as well as learn with/from veterans.

Here are 3 important tips shared during the panel for aspiring authors:

1️⃣ Research, research, and research some more! This means spending time reading and studying the books of your favorite authors within your desired genre. Always keep a pulse on what’s working and what’s not in the publishing space.

2️⃣ Should you self-publish? Get an agent? Go the trad publishing route? Learn more about the different pathways to publication so you can weigh the pros and cons to make the best decision for YOU!

3️⃣ Find a trusted writing critique group. You’ll have the opportunity to exchange feedback on each other’s work and improve on your craft. As a result, you get to relieve your family and friends of the burden to be “nice” about your work🫣🤪

Have more tips to share? Drop them in the comment section ⬇️
