The world of the Last Caliph. From the sensual, intellectual yet perilous harem to the ceramic beauty of the Top Kapi palace. And from the arms of his grandfather and cousin to the harems of Armenia and the sweeping views of Constantinople (Istanbul). Watch this space for my next book. The Last Caliph, life and times of Abdelmejid II and his daughter Princess Durrusehvar of Hyderabad. Delighted to have seen these pictures at @friezemasters @kentantiques by @moinmir9513

The French Riviera with its light and sapphire waters was the creative wellspring for Monet, Renoir, Bonnard, Cezanne, Signac, Manet and even the Last Caliph Abdelmejid who lived in Nice from 1924-1940. There, inspired by the European masters of the past he painted with great verve. Deeply enriching to have seen ‘Painting the French Riviera’ at the Royal Academy. The Last Caliph Abdelmejid was a Francophile deeply influenced by French art and literature. I was fortunate enough to see the exhibition Renoir and Love at the @nationalgallery today. The Last Caliph’s father was the first Ottoman Sultan Caliph to visit Paris in 1867 for the Universelle and Renoir painted Paris during that exposition (first two paintings). Abdelmejid was also influenced by the French author Maupassant and translated his works into Turkish. The third painting by Renoir was inspired by Maupassant’s settings in parks and boat rides which he believed were idyllic places for heterosexual and homosexual love stories to blossom. The French cafes, luncheons, Parisian street life, flirtatious encounters in parks and dances painted by Renoir enamored Abdelmejid who lived for forty years in France. And through the paintings of Renoir I was able to see what the Last caliph must have seen during his time in France by @moinmir9513

Life on the French riviera in the 1920s and the art that came out of it which inspired the Last Caliph. First two paintings by Sir John Lavery of life in Cannes in the 1920s. Tennis at Hotel Beau Site. Third painting by Monet of the French Riviera. Fourth painting by Paul Signac of St. Tropez, fifth painting by the same artist of Constantinople. Sixth is a portrait by Renoir. Seventh is again a Paul Signac’s St.Tropez and eighth is Matisse. Happy 85th father. A life of elegance which embodies old school princely India. An aesthete with an incredible eye for beauty, literature and the arts. From the works of Tagore to Ghalib, from Chekov to Saadi - and from understanding the fine weave of Persian carpets to Queen Anne furniture; from a deep immersion in Chopin to reciting Rumi, your fascination and quest for beauty is insatiable. At the age of five you introduced me to El Cid, Quo Vadis and Rodin. Nothing more to say. As the Darbar of Kamadhia and Scion of the Nawab family of Surat one couldn’t have asked for a more culturally enriching father. Thank you. by @moinmir9513

For my new book I’ve been walking in the footsteps of The Last Caliph and Princess Durrusehvar in the most charming part of Nice, on the French Riviera. The hill of Cimiez is a honeycomb of exquisite French villas hidden behind tall pine, cypress and palm trees. As I walked up the hill I passed villas that transported me back to the 1920s - a sort of fairy land. Villa Carabacel where the Last Caliph lived with his daughter has been brought down but the main entrance still remains (pic 1). Strolling downhill, the views of pink rooftops against the Mediterranean were equally stunning. A lunch at the Maliki’s with delightful friends satiated the worked up appetite. Thank you for your hospitality. Watch this space for my next book: ‘The Last Caliph: Life and times of Abdelmejid II and his daughter Princess Durrusehvar of Hyderabad’ by @moinmir9513
