Kahroba — A #Southern Pulse Through #Puppetry
In Kahroba, I had the honor of being the puppeteer behind a young southern girl who refuses to be silenced — confronting forced marriage and generations of inherited fear.

This story is deeply personal to me. My heart has always belonged to #southern_Iran — not only because my mother was born in Bushehr, but because I’ve left pieces of myself in places like Masjed Soleyman, Andimeshk, and Ahvaz. I’ve traveled south many times, and every time, I’ve come back changed — with more warmth, more memory, and more love for the people whose kindness knows no borders.

Directed by #Hajar_Mehrani, #Kahroba first premiered at the 12th Tehran International Animation Festival, later honored as one of the Top 6 films by the #Farhang_Foundation Short Film Festival in the U.S.

It’s more than a film. It’s a tribute — to courage, to voice, and to the South that beats in my chest. taken in DEFC by @moliishere

#Puppeteering Kahroba — A Story That Crossed Borders
Honored to have been the puppeteer of #Kahroba — a bold and poetic short film directed by #Hajar_Mehrani, originally premiered at the 12th Tehran International Animation Festival and later selected by the #Farhang_Foundation as one of the Top 6 films at its prestigious Short Film Festival in the U.S.

Kahroba tells the story of a courageous young girl from southern Iran who dares to defy the weight of tradition. Through silence, movement, and resistance, she challenges forced marriage and deep-rooted patriarchal beliefs — with no fear of being heard.

Blending #puppetry with #animation, Kahroba has resonated with audiences across cultures, earning both national and #international recognition.

A proud moment in my journey as a puppeteer, and a project brought to life by an exceptional team. taken in DEFC by @moliishere

⚠️If there’s anything wrong with the translation or subtitles, please forgive me — I’m not a pro, just a brave amateur on a mission!🚸
⚠️I chose this scene from my performance because May 1st is #International_Workers' Day. I've always tried, in my own way, to be a voice for the workers.

Performance Summary – “The Last Station”
Writer and Director: Mali :)

This performance unfolds entirely within a simulated metro carriage, replicating a journey from Enqelab Station to Azadi Station in Tehran.. Over the span of 40 minutes, the audience is introduced to a mosaic of voices and lives—thirteen main and secondary characters—whose stories are not limited to words. These are not just dialogues; they are cries, whispers, moments of silence, and fragments of real life.

The characters include:

- A simple worker whose employer hasn’t paid his salary, leaving him in dire financial hardship.
- Two veterans of the Iran-Iraq War who now suffer from chemical injuries and express frustration with the current state of the country.
- Two young Afghan men struggling with unemployment and systemic racism in Iran.
- Two female street vendors in the metro, selling clothing and accessories to survive.
- A child laborer who sells fortune-telling cards from one carriage to another.
- A young man who dreamed of becoming an actor but never found a chance—so he now performs brief reenactments of iconic scenes at each station.
- Two underground rappers who perform in secrecy, since rap and hip-hop are illegal in Iran.
- A young soldier, a symbol of the state’s militarized youth, who remains asleep for most of the performance.

These stories are more than performances—they are lived experiences. Most of the actors played their true selves, making this a documentary theater piece. Much of what is shared is non-verbal: looks, gestures, breathing. Their silence speaks as loudly as their words.

In 2022, I directed a theater performance for the Experimental Theater Festival at the University of Tehran. I received notice of my prison sentence during the days leading up to the performance. However, I chose not to inform the cast and crew to avoid disrupting their focus on the performance. I only shared the news with a few close friends, and we were in the process of deciding whether to cancel the show or proceed as planned.

The atmosphere of the festival was highly tense and stressful. That year, numerous politically and socially engaged performances were staged without any official review or censorship. At any moment, we feared that security agents might arrest students and remove them from the premises.

Several aspects of my production were legally and politically sensitive. We had invited Afghan actors without legal residency in Iran, individuals born and raised in the country, but still denied the right to live freely and safely. Additionally, underground hip-hop and protest rap artists participated, risking severe punishment due to the illegality of protest music in Iran. As protest rap music is banned and considered a criminal offense in Iran.

The content of the performance was both social and political, addressing economic hardships faced by various social groups. The piece was interactive and included audience participation. We designed the stage to resemble a metro train car, where actors would board and exit at different "stations," while the audience remained seated until the final stop.

To ensure safety, we stationed several individuals at the venue's entrance to monitor the audience and prevent any potential undercover security agents from entering and disrupting the show. In the end, everything went smoothly and the performance was a success.

Shabakeyeh Koochak has 11 Items for show,
Number 6: "History Retold" This is produced by people in Shabakeye Koochak and is a retelling of important historical events from Sormeh-Khan's viewpoint. According to him, history is man-made and no one has ever talked about the role of animals in it. So he, accompanied by Shabrang, offers a different version.

Shabakeyeh Koochak has 11 Items for show, Number 2: "Public Bath" It used to be on the exact location where t he network currently exists; it is lost in time and cannot move forward. Sometimes, a connection is made between these two points in time, although it is not permanent. Dalak, the owner, wants to move forward and reach the time of network and its staff. In this item, mascot-like puppets were used with moving mouthpieces and eyes. These were created with papier-mâché technique, a technique seldom used in tv productions, which took 6 months of long, nonstop work. Puppets: - Kiseh - Shooneh - Sange-Pa - Lif - Loong - Sefidab - Dalak - Saboon - Framed picture of Dalak's late father
.....
Shabakeye Koochak" is a puppet show was aired from Saturday to Tuesday on 20 o'clock, on Nasim Network and its reruns were shown on 1 a.m., 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The show format was puppet-real, while its genre was comedy, fantasy and musical. Mehdi Naeini played the role of 'Sohrab' and Mina Salimi was 'Soheila'; they, alongside puppet of different animals, run a TV network and produce different programs. During the new eve holidays (2021), 13 episodes were aired on channel 2 and later on, all 52 episodes of season 1 (with minor changes) were broadcasted again from 28 August, 2021. Due to its high quality and similarity to international productions of the time, #Shabakeye_Koochak received much acclaim and positive reviews. The idea was a puppet-real show about running a #TV network and its backstage. The show had to have various items (as if produced for Shabakeye Koochak) which were adjustable based on viewers' feedback. By the end of same year, the outline was completed and proposed items and basic set were approved. In spring, #Amir Soltan-Ahmadi and Azadeh Pour-Mokhtar joined the team as head of the writers and project advisor, respectively. Amir Soltan created a virtual think-tank for exchange of ideas; To make the characters more concrete, seven practice sessions were held with the director/head of writers, voice actors, puppeteers and actors. They exchanged ideas about special characteristics of each puppet to make them and their relationships more real and believable. by @moliishere
