Hello lovelies! 🤩 Work on book number 2 is ALL SYSTEMS GO 📚✍️ To that end...it now has its own dedicated email address so people can send me ideas, anecdotes, things of interest, bits and pieces! Book 2 is 'Only Punk Rock Can Save the World' and looks at Punk messages and activism through a series of themes including mental health, labour justice, wealth equality, housing and some others which I'll reveal in due course! I'm not restrained by time or place so am looking for examples of songs/bands/gigs/compilation CDs/campaigns/events that demonstrate Punk has been involved in taking a stance with regards to the above. No reference too obvious OR too obscure! If you ever have something to share that is interesting, you can contact me via oprcstw@gmail.com 😉 I'll update my bio as well! Thanks punks! #Punk #punkrockphilosophy #onlypunkcansaveus #punkbooks #authorsofinstagram by @molly_tie
It's been more than a week since I last posted about my upcoming book so I think you'll indulge me another one! This June, my book 'Rebel Grrrls- The Real Story of Women and Punk- is being released via @omnibuspress ! For 'Rebel Grrrls' I wanted to think about women's experiences as fans of punk from the very inception, right through to modern day. I look at each main 'wave' of punk- 1970s UK bands, 80s US hardcore, riot grrrl, pop punk, emo, ska punk, and modern resurgence. For each era, I look at the social and political context punk responded to specifically, and how female fans experienced going to gigs, buying records, finding friends and community and how well they felt represented. How have different punk scenes addressed violence against women? How safe are gigs? How many bands with sexist lyrics have gone un addressed? Is punk inherently Feminist? But as well as being a critical friend to the genre, the book also celebrates all the fantastic contributions punk has made to people's lives- through activism, through encouraging self expression and freedom, through community bonds and.....some of the best music in the world! Pre order via the Omnibus website- link in bio. Oh and prepare to be spammed by more book promo in the next few months 😅😅😅 #Punk #punkrock #rebelgrrrls #punkbooks #womeninpunk by @molly_tie
Hello 👋 Just a periodic reminder that I run a website called Punk Rock Philosophy and it would be lovely if you wanted to check it out! It has 3 parts and each part has loads to explore! Punk Rock Philosophy- looks at the ideas behind punk or specific song themes and looks at where those ideas came from. Things like anti authority, straight edge, anarchism, DIY, feminism etc. Lots of classic philosophers in there as well! Only Punk Rock Can Save the World- lots of interviews and features about using punk to do good things, what it means in practice. I've interviewed bands, promoters and academics... shows the good that punk can inspire us to do! New Music- what it says on the tin. Reviews and playlists of new Punk music (or punk adjacent) that I like. So lots of stuff for the punk enthusiast and connoisseur. Link is in bio 😃 #punk #punksnotdead #punkrock #punkrockphilosophy #hardcoremusic #hardcorepunk #riotgrrrl #feministpunk #womeninpunk #diypunk #punkwebsite #punkhistory #punkpolitics #musicwriter #newmusic by @molly_tie
Hello lovelies! Hope you had a good Monday 😃 Mine was dedicated to writing and so I was elbow deep in punk research! And on that note, here's a bit more info about another topic that will feature in my upcoming book 'Only Punk Rock Can Save the World' 🌎 And how you can help! The chapter on Punk and workplace justice will cover a few different things including (but certainly not limited to) punk's relationship with unions, fundraisers for striking workers, songs about alienation and burnout and any tangential topics where Punk overlaps with the world of work. Songs, activism, musicians who are active in this space, punks outspoken about juggling work with touring, punks fighting against sweatshops etc etc....do you have suggestions of things to include? Taking a GLOBAL approach? Any era of punk and including small scenes or obscure action? I've got a tip line open- OPRCSTW@GMAIL.COM or...message me here! Punk hive mind unite! #Punk #punkrockphilosophy #onlypunkcansavetheworld #punkrock by @molly_tie
Happy Sunday lovelies! Right....let me cut to the chase... It's the 1st of November. It's NEARLY Christmas and you might be in the market for gift ideas... And so, might I suggest a fabulous book all about the history of punk and feminism? Covering all major eras from 1970s to today? Full of testimonies from female punk fans? And a playlist? And my punk theories immortalised on the page? For those who might not know....I wrote a book called "Rebel Grrrls- the Real Story of Women and Punk" and it's OUT and you can buy it! There's a link in my bio but you can also get it wherever you normally buy books (within reason obvs). If you get a copy of my book, you'll make this punk's wildest dreams come true ✨️ #rebelgrrrls #punkbooks #authorsofinstagram #punkrock by @molly_tie
Hello lovelies! Hope you've all had a good weekend 😊 If you need something to listen to this Sunday afternoon, might I suggest the @fourrecordspodcast for @dyingscene where me and @dontsurfbooks went through my selection of four life-defining albums for my 40 years of existence 🤩 I had loads of fun on this episode talking about albums by Polaris, The Donnas, @the_clash and @sincereengineer . A fine selection if I do say so myself! Head to @fourrecordspodcast page and you can listen via the link in their bio or look it up on YouTube. #Punk #theclash #musicpodcasts #rebelgrrrls #thedonnas by @molly_tie
The Donnas’ Turn 21 is turning 25, which feels like a perfect excuse to crank it up and talk about this band’s impact during such a specific time in the early 2000s. We’ve got guest author Molly Tie of Punk Rock Philosophy on our Substack this week. She’s looking back at the record through the lens of growing up obsessed with pop punk: loving the bands, wanting in, and dealing with the reality that the scene usually cast girls as someone’s crush rather than the ones holding the instruments. The Donnas offered a completely new and authentic perspective on female empowerment. They also had to put up with a genuinely depressing amount of sexist garbage for doing it. Molly gets into all of it in her article: the music, the sexist reviews, the party anthems, and what it meant to finally hear girls having that much fun entirely on their own terms. Full piece is up on the Substack. Link in bio. Were The Donnas part of your teenage soundtrack? • • • • #thedonnas #poppunk by @molly_tie
ORIGIN STORY! Ha ha.... I was thinking about how I first got into punk as it's come up a few times when talking about 'Rebel Grrrls' and my relationship with Punk. When I was about 12, I was at a car boot sale and a man was selling cassette tapes that were mixes he had made. They were in a big box and were about 30p. There was one that said 'PUNK'....and that's it! No track listing or other information 😅 So I bought it! I had to give it to my dad's mate (who was widely regarded to know a lot about music) so he could listen and write the tracks down! And it was all old school 70s stuff- Clash, Buzzcocks, Members, Skids etc....and that's where it all started! I didn't like all of it but I liked ENOUGH to start me off. And funnily enough, the only Clash song on it was Tommy Gun which I don't actually like but they became my favourite band. The tape is long gone now and I've reconstructed the track list in the pic purely based on memory. There's a few tracks I just can't remember but every now and again something flashes in my mind! I wish I still had that tape 😪 And thank you to that mystery man for making it! #Punk #punkrockhistory #rebelgrrrls #punkrockphilosophy by @molly_tie
Three months since we got our little rebel grrrl Loretta! Absolutely gorgeous little thing! And she has now taken over as Editor-in-Chief of Punk Rock Philosophy 😅 #catswithjobs #catsofınstagram by @molly_tie
The Herstory of Sound 🎸📖 These books put women at the center of punk and alternative music, not as muses, not as exceptions, but as the architects. Some of these books are memoirs. Hello lovelies! I'm putting the feelers out and hoping to tap up your punk knowledge so please have a read and share! I am writing my second book- 'Only Punk Rock Can Save the World: A Manifesto For Change'. It will chronicle the rich history of punk rock activism and political stances across a variety of different themes. One of those areas will be housing. I want to compile the songs about housing/landlords/homelessness/gentrification etc from punk scenes across the world so please let me know anything you can think of! Any compilations that were produced to raise money for homelessness or any gigs you went to for the same reason- let me know! And....what about punks who took on a more political role by supporting a strike or squatters or who were involved in organised action around housing? Anywhere in the world? I have an email address : OPRCSTW@GMAIL.COM to send stuff to OR....you can message me here. I have written on Punk Rock Philosophy about this before albeit a brief overview- I've put the link to that article in my bio so have a read if you want some inspiration! Oh and if you know the song the quote in the middle is from...I'll send you a badge! And if you can re post this, I will be grateful! #Punk #punkrockphilosophy #onlypunkrockcansaveus by @molly_tie
So unfortunately I didn't really take many photos from @offtheshelffestival 😭 Which is a shame because I had a FANTASTIC time on Sunday, on stage in conversation with @aurielmajumdar talking about 'Rebel Grrrls: The Real Story of Women and Punk'! We had a great chat and all the questions from the audience were really interesting and gave me more opportunities to express my Punk theories 😅😅 What a great event! Oh and if you ever need someone to turn up somewhere and gabble on about punk during the Reagan administration or riot grrrl or pop punk or sexism in the scene or the bright future of punk etc then I'm your gal! And I promise my dressing room demands are very reasonable. #rebelgrrrls #offtheshelffestival #Punk #punkwriters by @molly_tie
