More parents are declining the eye drops at birth. Whatever you decide, you should know the facts first. Here they are. 💛

WHAT IT IS:
A thin line of antibiotic ointment called erythromycin, placed in baby’s eyes within an hour or two of birth. It’s the only medication FDA approved for this in the US.

WHAT IT PREVENTS:
An eye infection called ophthalmia neonatorum, also known as newborn conjunctivitis. The most serious form is caused by gonorrhea, which baby can pick up during birth. If mom has it and baby isn’t protected, there’s a 30 to 50% chance baby gets it. It moves fast and can cause blindness.

“But I don’t have gonorrhea!”
You’re probably right. But:
🔹 Many women with gonorrhea have no symptoms.
🔹 You may only be tested once, early in pregnancy.
🔹 Exposure can happen after your test.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY:
🔹 The US Preventive Services Task Force gives it their highest rating.
🔹 It’s required by law in most states.
🔹 Hospitals give it even when mom tested negative, as a safety net.

CAN ANYTHING GO WRONG?
Serious side effects haven’t been found. The most common ones are:
🔹 Temporary blurry vision for the first few hours
🔹 Mild redness or irritation, usually gone in a day or two
🔹 Rarely, an allergic reaction

IT’S LIMITS:
🔹 It isn’t 100% effective.
🔹 It doesn’t reliably prevent chlamydia eye infections.

TRUST YOUR TEAM:
You chose your OB or midwife for a reason. They do these things to protect your baby. Ask them questions and understand the why.

Before you decide
✔️ Talk to your provider BEFORE labor
✔️ Ask when you were last tested
✔️ If you decline, call your pediatrician right away for any pus, swelling, or redness in baby’s eyes

Know the facts. Ask the questions. Make YOUR decision. 💛

Did you know your baby’s brain is forming more than 1 million new connections every second? 🧠

Scientists used to think it was 700 to 1,000 per second. Then Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child updated the research. The real number is over a million.

Every second.

This happens in the first few years of life, roughly birth to age 3. In fact, a child’s brain grows faster from birth to 5 than at any other time in their life. After that, the brain slows down on building new connections and starts strengthening the ones that get used the most.

I know. You’re running so fast. Or so low on sleep. Or both. 😅

But here’s the good news. It’s the little things that make the big difference.

✨ Talk to them while you change diapers, fold laundry, make coffee
✨ Sing. …Badly is fine. They don’t care
✨ Look them in the eyes during feeds
✨ When they coo, coo back… mimic them and let them mimic you!
✨ Hold them when they cry. You can’t spoil a baby

These are little humans. They are watching you. Listening to you. Absorbing everything.

As daunting as that may feel, the learning and the parenting start right out of the gate. And you don’t have to be perfect at it. You just have to be there.

And if you need someone in your corner during those early weeks, that’s exactly what we do at Beyond Birthing Associates. Send us a message! #postpartumsupport #doulasupport #michiganmoms #metrodetroitmom #michiganmom by @mollygreen_2002

So let me save you some time Googling. Here’s what actually helps newborn sleep…..Not perfect sleep. Better sleep!

	1.	Teach day from night.
Days are bright, noisy, and chatty. Nights are dark, quiet, and boring. Still feed at night. Just keep it dim and low-key so baby learns the difference.

	2.	Watch your baby, not the clock.
Yawning. Staring off into space. Getting fussy out of nowhere. That’s your cue. Miss it and you’ve got an overtired baby who fights sleep like it’s their job!

	3.	Get good, full feeds in during the day.
Calm feeds where baby really eats. And if they cluster feed in the evening? Totally normal. Not a failure. Not a bad habit.

	4.	Pause before you pounce.
Newborns are LOUD sleepers. Grunting. Squeaking. Wiggling. Sometimes a little cry. Give it a minute. A lot of the time they settle right back down on their own.

	5.	Mix up where naps happen.
Some on you. Some in the bassinet. Some on a walk. It builds flexibility. (Overnight and anytime you’re not watching, flat on their back in their own safe space. Always.)

	6.	Start a simple bedtime routine around 6 to 8 weeks.
Bath, feed, cuddle, bed. Same order. Same-ish time. Babies love predictable. Honestly, so do we!!

	7.	Rhythm, not a schedule.
Eat, play, sleep, repeat. You don’t need a color-coded spreadsheet. You need a pattern.

	8.	Get help!!!
You cannot pour from an empty cup. And newborn sleep deprivation is no joke. This is exactly what postpartum doulas do. We hold the baby. We hold you. We help you find your rhythm so you can actually rest.

I watch the news like everyone else, and lately my heart just aches for these moms.

We’ve always rushed through this season of life. Now there’s fear layered on top of it too, moms terrified something is coming for them before they’ve even met their baby.

I had four kids on my own. I loved every second of it, and I still rushed through more of it than I’d like to admit. I know what it’s like to be too deep in something to see it clearly while it’s happening.

That’s really what this whole post is about. Slowing down. Taking the fear seriously without letting it run the show. Link in bio 💕 www.beyondbirthingassociates.com by @mollygreen_2002

We pulled a few thoughts from people in the public eye. However your journey looks, @beyond_birthing_associates is here for you✨🍼

We will do ANYTHING to fix our sleep. Melatonin. Trackers. Blackout curtains. White noise machines that sound like ocean waves that don’t exist anywhere near us. Coffee to survive the sleep we didn’t get. We spend billions trying to fix this one thing.

And it’s not us being dramatic. Losing sleep raises your risk of dying early. It messes with your mental health. It’s linked to heart disease and diabetes. Drowsy driving is involved in almost 1 in 5 fatal car crashes. That’s just the research.

We treat all of that like a real problem worth solving. Then a baby shows up, and somehow none of it counts anymore.

Healing from birth or surgery. Hormones no supplement can touch. Up every 2 to 3 hours all night for weeks. And what do we hand them? A casserole and “sleep when the baby sleeps,” which if you’ve tried it, you know is basically impossible.

I do this for a living. We take the overnight shift so parents can actually sleep ..real sleep. And every time I tell someone that’s my job, they stop and go “wait, that’s a THING? I would have sold a kidney for that.”.

That’s the part that gets me. Not that people need help...It’s that so many have never even heard this exists!

If this is you, or you know someone about to have a baby, I want it out there. This is real. You don’t have to white knuckle it because that’s “what everyone does.”

Who else had no clue this was a thing? 👇

ACOG just made it official: doulas belong in the room.

This is exciting clinical news, and I've been waiting for this.

On Friday, July 16th, ACOG — the top medical organization for OB-GYNs — released formal guidance on doctors partnering with doulas. When ACOG puts something in writing, that's not a small deal. Timing couldn't be more perfect for us!! 😊

In plain English: having a doula there leads to safer, healthier outcomes. Fewer unnecessary interventions. Lower chance of a C-section. Now official, in writing, from the top of the medical field.

This matters most for moms who've worried their wants won't be heard, or that a doctor will push their own agenda instead of listening to hers. Those doctors exist, but they're not the ones partnering with doulas. The OB-GYNs we work with? They're thrilled when a client has one. Some say "don't let the doulas leave!"

And we don't. We stay with these moms at home until they see their doctor at the six week postpartum check, holding down the fort in between.

This is a genuinely huge win…for moms, for babies, and for every doula who's known this all along. 🎉 We are SO here for it!! Read full guidelines here: https://www.acog.org/news/news-releases/2026/07/new-guidance-for-ob-gyns-on-partnering-with-doulas

The second contractions start, every instinct says GO NOW. Here's the thing though, staying home longer is usually the smarter move.
New blog post breaks down the 5-1-1 rule (still the standard in 2026), the exceptions worth knowing, and why early labor is actually the part where a doula earns her keep.
Read it now, link in bio. 🔗
