Today in the studio: making our hardware store ghost a bit spookier. by @mollyrspring
I’m back from a trip to England, where I took a day trip from London to Monk’s House, Virginia Woolf’s country home in Rodmell. I walked to the house from Southese station. England is in the middle of a drought, so the landscape was brown and the River Ouse was quite low, but it was easy to imagine the countryside has remained largely unchanged since Woolf last walked there. I’ve spent the better part of the last ten years thinking about and making drawings inspired by Woolf’s work, so my visit felt like a pilgrimage. A young woman was openly weeping outside the entry gate when I arrived, so I wasn’t the only one for whom the visit was personally significant. I teared up when I entered the parlor, and again when I entered Woolf’s bedroom. But I think you feel the loss more in the place, among the evidence of her life, where she found happiness much of the time. I left an offering in the greenery below Woolf’s memorial stone. Her ashes are buried nearby. Pictured: — Woolf’s armchair in the parlor. I’ve seen this chair and its distinctive upholstery in so many photos. — Vanessa Bell’s famous portrait of Woolf, hanging above a cabinet hand-painted and designed by Bell. The house is full of art, furniture, and decorative objects made by Bell, Duncan Grant, and other members of the Bloomsbury Group. — The fireplace in Woolf’s bedroom. The tile was hand-painted by Bell as a gift for her sister. I was excited to see that the To the Lighthouse-themed illustration echoed my choice to use a tanbark sail in my recent site-specific installation! — Woolf’s bedroom chair, where she often worked when it was too cold to go to her studio. The books are Woolf’s complete set of Shakespeare, which she hand-bound. — Woolf’s memorial stone and bust in the garden. Leonard inscribed the stone with the last line from The Waves, “Against you I fling myself, unvanquished and unyielding, O Death! The waves crashed on the shore.” #holographdraft #virginiawoolf #monkshouse by @mollyrspring
I’m back home now after an incredible visit to Paris for the opening of Commander Lowell. Many thanks to the team at Zander Galerie! I’m grateful for their support and thoughtful presentation of my work—and these beautiful installation shots. If you find yourself in Paris and have time to check out the show, it will be up through August 1st. The gallery is located at 6 Rue Jacob in the 6th arrondissement. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 am to 7 pm, and by appointment. (Note: the gallery will be closed on July 14 for the public holiday. 🇫🇷) (Slide for a bonus pic of @atpugkapeed and me on our first night in Paris. Our boat was apparently in John Wick, which our captain was very disappointed that we had not seen. 😂) #themarginaliaarchive #CommanderLowell #ZanderGalerieParis #Drawing #ContemporaryArt by @mollyrspring
It’s our sixth gotcha day with Kavi. Sadly, we’re traveling, but trust our Rover will give him a churu in our absence. by @mollyrspring
My solo exhibition, Commander Lowell, opens on July 2 at @zandergalerie in Paris! I’ll be showing a single, multi-panel drawing from my ongoing project, The Marginalia Archive. From the gallery’s press release: “The large-scale work in this exhibition, Commander Lowell, is based on a marked copy of a poem by the American poet Robert Lowell from his 1959 autobiographic collection Life Studies. Developed through public submissions, The Marginalia Archive draws on books marked by readers and accompanied by reflections describing their relationship to the text. In Commander Lowell, Springfield enlarges and isolates annotations and graphic interventions left in the margins of the poem. While these marks suggest a form of language, their meaning often remains legible only to their authors. Detached from their original context, the markings hover between personal notation and abstract image.” Many thanks to @lillymcelroy for contributing her annotated copy of Commander Lowell to the archive back in 2008. (I started soliciting submissions for the archive in 2007. If you’ve ever tried to get a participatory art project off the ground, you know how hard it can be. So I’m grateful for everyone who’s contributed to the archive over the years.) The on-brand books that @atpugkapeed and I got each other for our (28th!) anniversary. We celebrated at @revelershour where I managed to share my garlic knot. That’s true love. by @mollyrspring
I’m just back from a trip to Ireland. Most of my pictures are of food or moss, which are probably only interesting to me. But I saw some great art in Dublin—a standout was Magnhild Opdøl’s exhibition of drawings and sculpture at the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts. Pictured here: A song stuck in my head, 2025 graphite on watercolor paper 50 x 38.5 inches I plan on writing a poem about this, 2024 (detail) graphite on watercolor paper 37 x 31 inches The exhibition is up through April 19, so if you find yourself in Dublin check it out! @magnhildopdol @rha.arts by @mollyrspring
