Always a Patchett fan… The prose on this one was stunning as usual, but without friction, the plot slid into a snoozefest (like Tom Lake)….. 💤

Top summer read so far. A compelling blend of investigative journalism and memoir that began with Baker’s reporting as a Stanford freshman. He masterfully examines two parallel storylines: Silicon Valley’s influence on Stanford, where students and professors increasingly pursue money, power, and prestige over knowledge, and the culture of elite academia, exposing research fraud and academic politics. Admirably brave, eye-opening, and exceptionally well written. Baker’s reporting ultimately led to the resignation of Stanford’s president and stands as a powerful reminder that truth remains the best disinfectant.

My favorite detectives are back. The ridiculously complicated plot involves four possible murder inquiries and countless characters. But Strike and Robin remain thoroughly good company and their “will-they-won’t-they” dynamic kept me riveted until the final minutes of this 30+ hour audiobook. While the premise is unoriginal, self-help guru Mel Robbins has successfully re-popularized the idea of giving up control over other people’s behavior. This notion shows up in Buddhism, Stoicism, the Serenity Prayer. A counterintuitive concept—but deeply powerful. Bottom line? Trying to control other people is a losing game. Wow. Amanda Knox is utterly singular—brilliant, complex, and baffling. She recounts her horrific experience of being wrongfully accused and imprisoned for the death of her roommate while studying abroad in Italy. It is a Kafkaesque nightmare of navigating the Italian criminal justice system while incarcerated, being in legal purgatory long afterward, and her new life as the tabloid caricature “Foxy Knoxy” upon her return to the States. Her efforts to connect and forgive her prosecutor stunned me and left me in awe. This is a story of survival and a search for meaning beyond her own self-preservation. It’s also a meditation on truth, identity, and the cost of being misunderstood.
