Illinois Farm Families and IL Corn invited me to a fabulous tour on the Larson-Martz farm to get an inside look at how modern farming relies heavily on precise science to protect crops while safeguarding our food supply, soil, and communities. Farmers use GPS and sensors to spray only where needed and other methods such as tilling and integrated pest management to apply just the right amount of chemical to grow safe and healthy crops while protecting the soil and water on their land.

This Rows and Roundtables event brought together local farm families, fellow mom influencers, and experts in the agricultural community to showcase generational farming and the care that goes into being the second-largest corn-producing state in the US. Illinois farm families grow corn for more than just our bellies! The majority of the corn grown in Illinois is used as animal feed, fuel and industrial products such as biodegradable plastics (PLA), adhesives, and cosmetics.

As Ari and I visited Jim and Pam on the Robbins Farm I was able to see first hand how a generational corn farmer in Illinois takes great care in knowing which pesticides should be used in addition to when and how much can be applied to grow safe and healthy crops.

The mom in me is always worried about how are food is grown, but as a pharmacist I appreciate the precise methods used to minimize weeds and bugs that can harm successful crop yields. This careful balancing act provides cost effective and healthy agricultural across Illinois. Take a second and marinate some chicken.
Super easy, juicy, sweet, spicy, harissa, honey and yogurt marinated chicken for salads, wraps, rice bowls:

1.5 lb chicken breast Pine Manor Farms @wholefoods
1/3 cup Greek yogurt (whole milk) @chobani
Zest from 1 lemon
2 tbsp lemon juice (half lemon)
2 tbsp honey @localhivehoney
2 tbsp harissa @mina
3 tbsp EV olive oil @getgraza
1 tsp kosher salt or to taste

I like to pound the chicken flat so it’s about an inch thick then cook on medium-high heat for 5-6 min per side. Let the chicken rest before cutting into.
