Prince Albert II Tours Petit Palais Retrospective Highlighting Éva Gonzalès and Her Monegasque Roots.

On Monday, September 14, Prince Albert II of Monaco visited the Petit Palais in Paris alongside Emmanuel Grégoire, the mayor of Paris, to tour the exhibition «Éva Gonzalès: Parcours d’une artiste libre». Running from September 15, 2026, to January 24, 2027, the exhibition showcases the life and career of the French artist of Monegasque descent.

Born in 1847 and passing away prematurely at the age of 34 in 1883, Éva Gonzalès occupies a significant place in art history. She was the daughter of the serial novelist Emmanuel Gonzalès (1815–1887), whose bust is located in the Saint-Martin gardens. Her family descended from a Spanish lineage established in Monaco in the early 17th century, during a period when a Spanish king’s garrison defended the sovereignty of Monaco on the Rock.

The Princely Collections include roughly ten pictorial works by Éva Gonzalès, while the Palace Archives preserve a collection of family documents testifying to this history. As an important lender to the Paris exhibition, the Sovereign has helped enable the public to rediscover the trajectory and work of the late artist. Following its run in the French capital, an adapted version of the exhibition is scheduled to travel to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in the spring of 2027.

A Quiet Refuge Under Threat:
Protecting the Mediterranean
Monk Seal.

With fewer than 1,000 Mediterranean monk seals surviving worldwide, these elusive marine mammals face severe pressures along remote coastlines in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic. Summer marks a critical window for the species, as mother seals rely on secluded coastal caves and calm waters to nurse and rest with their pups. However, the seasonal surge in tourism - brought by increased maritime vessel activity, swimmers, and coastal noise - directly threatens these vital nursery habitats.

To safeguard the remaining populations, conservation organizations such as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Monk Seal Alliance emphasize strict guidelines for ethical wildlife encounters. Observers should maintain a respectful distance, keep noise to a minimum, and ensure pathways between the seals and the open water remain completely unobstructed.

Sovereign Harmony: Orchestre
Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo Opens Summer Season at the Prince’s Palace.

Continuing an uninterrupted midcentury tradition that bridges European statecraft with the symphonic arts, the Cour d’Honneur of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco hosted
the opening performance of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo’s (OPMC) 2026 Summer
Concerts series. Under the baton of guest conductor Philippe Jordan, the open-air concert featured a rigorous rendition of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor, a choice reflecting the ensemble’s technical depth and the acoustic complexities of the palace’s central courtyard.

Initiated in 1959 under the direct patronage of Prince Rainier Ill, the seasonal concert series serves a distinct institutional purpose, formalizing the Grimaldi dynasty’s long-standing patronage of the performing arts and solidifying the sovereign state’s cultural footprint within Western Europe.

The majestic architectural framework of the palace serves as a controlled venue for the high-intensity performance, attracting an international audience of classical enthusiasts alongside local dignitaries. According to the official scheduling finalized by OPMC administrators, the historic courtyard series is slated to continue through late summer, with subsequent symphonic programs formally scheduled for July 12, July 26, July 30, August 2, and August 6, 2026.

The Unfinished Palace of an Unapologetic Collector: Peggy Guggenheim. Secrets of Success, Love, and Life: The Legacy of the World’s Visionaries.

Marguerite « Peggy » Guggenheim - the woman who made the act of collecting art a high-stakes performance - was born in New York City on August 26, 1898. As the daughter of Benjamin Guggenheim and Florette Seligman, she entered the world into a family defined by the sprawling, industrial-era wealth of the American mining dynasty.

Her early years were, by her own account, a lesson in constraint. The trajectory of her life shifted violently in 1912 when her father, Benjamin, perished aboard the RMS Titanic. His refusal to board a lifeboat - famously choosing to change into his formal evening attire and face his end with a brandy and a cigar - became a cornerstone of the family lore.

She attended the Jacobi School in New York, but formal education proved far less interesting to her than the intellectual pulse of the city’s underground. In 1920, having gained access to her inheritance, she began the first of many departures from her expected social sphere, moving to Europe.
