Blake Hornsby’s “Brugmansia” out on cassette 8/7!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
In honor of the start of Fall and the concurrent birth of my daughter, I present to you “Julia’s Equinox”- an Autumnal mixtape of sunbaked psychedelia. Like the collaged hues of seasonal foliage, the mix comingles mystical folk, organic ambient, and elegiac pop, anchored by an expansive interlude of pulsing, post-minimalist arrangements. Soundcloud and Google Drive link in @fallbreakrecords and @monadnocksound bio.

The latest pulse of freak folk is strong, and @blakehornsbymusic is one of its most gifted exponents. “Brugmansia” — named after the beautiful, poisonous flowering plant — sees the Asheville-based artist lean heavily into British acid folk, styling himself as a pointedly anachronistic lysergic troubadour.
Songs stretch out as if baking in the sun, existing somewhere between traditional song, avant-garde composition and ancient rite. The interest comes from the porous nature of the boundaries separating those three things. Collaborators include cellist @helenaespvall (formerly of Espers), tabla player Mallar Goswami and guitarist @buckcurran.
A strange and beguiling songwriter’s album, and a living one — defined by real musical ingenuity. 🌿🎸✨🌀

The harvest is in for @blakehornsbymusic’s Brugmansia which is out this Friday (8/7)! Grab a tape via the BC link in the bio. Blake digs deep into various folk traditions and what emerges is a mutant blend of the psychedelic and profane. Don’t take it from me, take it from these respected arbiters of taste:

“With one foot in the rainbow bog of the Incredible Stringband ecosystem and another in a portal to some different sunny dimension, Blake Hornsby’s Burgsmansia is transportative and beautiful, and like its namesake, dangerously hallucinogenic.” (Sally Anne Morgan)

“Blake Hornsby’s ‘Brugmansia’ is awash with riches, a veritable treasure box of psych wyrdness, replete with a healthy embrace of experimentalism and myriad dark and curious corners to explore. Sitars and strings converge with fingerpicked guitar, drones and eerie, unsettling samples from deep in the heart of the forest, and one is never clear if we haven’t actually stumbled into a timeslip leading directly to the heyday and creative high points of late 60’s/early 70’s acid folk. ‘The Child & The Crow’, in particular, conjures an unholy configuration of the pagan inhabitants of Summerisle with The Incredible String Band, whilst the beautifully ethereal and hypnagogic ‘Rishikesh’ manages to invoke numerous dreamlike worlds and strange landscapes within its eight-minute runtime. Quite simply, you need to hear this.” (Grey Malkin)

“Blake Hornsby’s Brugmansia is a collection of imaginative collages and searching inquiries, powered by memoiristic, punkish lyrics. Hornsby’s production mastery is evident as he’s not afraid to experiment with different sounds and studio effects. What other album can claim a singing bowl, pan flute, conch shell, and crow call in its credits? All of this comes together best within the captivating build of “Rishikesh,” the standout track of the album.” - (Scott Bunn, Recliner Notes)

“Cryptic and covered in soil, Blake Hornsby’s acoustic endeavors dredge the lake for all things Eastern-tinged and psychedelic. Third Ear Band aficionados take note: herewithin lies the wyrd and unsettled. Do take a listen. Yet, steel thyself…” (Greg Weeks) by @monadnocksound

We’ve been quiet for a bit, but on Bandcamp Friday August 7th we’re back with a bang!

On that date, @blakehornsbymusic’s Brugmansia is out on cassette via yours truly. The multi-talented, multi-instrumentalist returns with a follow-up to the all instrumental “A Village of Many Springs”- this time sharing a songwriter’s record in the family of Donovan/ Incredible String Band/Pearls Before Swine varietals. Go ahead and turn on your audio for a taste of the album!

Where the last one fused his fixation on Indian raga and drone improvisations with Fahey-esque guitar rambles, this one keeps the South Asian influence but instead heads in the far-out direction of progressive folk featuring lysergic lyricism, field recorded sounds of nature, and a deep bench of contributions from Mallar Goswami (Tabla), Sam Fanthorpe - (Violin, Vocals) , Buck Curran (Electric Guitar, E-Bow), Helena Espvall (Cello), Gwen Young (Flute, Vocals), David Colohan (whistle). by @monadnocksound

Stellar thoughts on the @psalterylalala album from @fool.jake’s High Horse substack. Particularly like this bit describing “Soul Breathes Easy”: “melodies dance up the walls, rhythms dance just as your kitchenware might shake during a haunting, and the vocals are a familiar, if not forlorn, rhyme that’ll keep you company even in the dead of night when all living things have gone to bed.” by @monadnocksound

Psaltery @psalterylalala “Same Old” out 9/5 on @monadnocksound. Swipe for sneak preview of a delicious earworm 🐛 and read these beautiful words on the album from our pal and-around-great-dude @themodernfolk :

“A psaltery is an ancient musical instrument, a bowed board of strings similar to a zither that foreshadowed dulcimers and harpsichords. Psaltery is a modern musical duo out of Atlanta, Georgia. Their latest effort Same Old weaves baroque string figures that tumble like tiny waterfalls over the sloping bedrock of light, shuffling percussion and dry drum machine patterns. These sounds construct worlds inhabited by personal musings delivered in twirling patterns and unexpected poetic meter, matching the liquid spill-out of the guitar, occasionally banjo. These tricky melodies are as new as the stories being beamed out are old, stories of love, love-lorn loneliness and personal growth, themes so eternal that they were probably sung over the psaltery in the dusty sun-drenched squares and marble halls of biblical Greece.

Same Old features a marriage of complexity and simpleness that will give anyone who has sat down to record a song themselves a tinge of envy to accompany their appreciation. Like the sparse bedroom recordings of Elliott Smith, these songs are skeletal, but these skeletons are composed of a dizzying array of bones, and they leave room for the listener to catch the entire emotional transmission. From a rented bedroom in Atlanta, straight to your heart, on a swirling signal, timeless as their namesake.” by @monadnocksound
