SUBCULTURE OR PRIMARY CULTURE?

Is Hip Hop a subculture, a counterculture, or an expression of a much deeper cultural heritage?
Join me as we challenge the language used to define Hip Hop and examine the distinction between culture, subculture, and counterculture. We’ll explore how African American cultural traditions, values, aesthetics, and social practices shaped Hip Hop—and question whether labeling Hip Hop a subculture adequately acknowledges the cultural foundations from which it emerged.
Who gets to define culture, and whose cultural perspective determines the definition?

When asked, “when will we be able to stop talking about racism” a noted scholar replied, “never, because we will always need to educate the next generation.”

It’s crazy that we still need to have these discussions but as looks as there are misinformed people I will continue to speak on it. by @moncelldurden

Words have intrinsic power and meaning, context provides comprehension.

Rethink the histories you have accepted as true, conceptualizing them instead as narratives as efforts at building canons, changeable, local and impermanent by @moncelldurden

Latest addition to my hip hop section. @bradleyrapier enjoying the book brotha. Dance community support the amazing work that comes out. By practitioners, elders, pioneers, historians, etc. they all add to the rich texture of this complex sub-culture. And Don’t give me that, “I don’t need to read about it I lived it” BS @crazylegsbx @djflash4eva legs I’m loving the structure and flow of the book. Flash I just started reading the book, I love the structure of the content section and starting off with the reflection of your father is a great way to get us into your line of sight. by @moncelldurden
