đŸ”„Today, Recruit Class 26-1 experienced the firefighter survival and rescue portion of their training with hands on RIC ( Rapid Intervention Crew ) drills at the Moneta Fire Department Training Facility.

🚒 Recruits were challenged with realistic downed firefighter rescue scenarios using live victims in loud, dark, cluttered environments designed to create sensory overload and test both mental and physical endurance. Crews had to maintain composure, communicate effectively, and work together under pressure to complete rescues safely and efficiently.

🚹 This type of training prepares future firefighters for the moments when teamwork matters most, when one of their own needs help.

đŸ€ A huge thank you to the Moneta Fire Department for supporting this training and continuing to invest in the fire service across our region.

Moneta Fire Department was dispatched to Company sevens first due for a large animal rescue. Utility 8 responded with four, along with Brush 8 with two.
Utility 8 arrived on scene following EMS 7-1 and established command. Rescue 5 and Support 1 also arrived shortly after, and crews worked together in a coordinated effort to remove a cow that had become trapped in a pond.
Despite the efforts of all personnel on scene, the cow unfortunately succumbed to its injuries. Crews still carried out a respectful and ethical removal of the animal for the owners before turning the scene over to them.
Strong work and cooperation by all agencies involved under difficult circumstances.

Moneta Fire responded to a reported brush fire in the San Marcos CT area that was threatening multiple structures.

Engine 8, Tanker 8, Brush 8, and Utility 8 arrived on scene to find an active fire spreading through the field and woods with exposures at risk. Crews quickly went to work containing and knocking down the fire, successfully stopping its forward progress before it could reach any of the five nearby structures.

Firefighter I Students Learning Search & Rescue and Firefighter Survival

This week, our Firefighter I students dove into some of the most critical and challenging aspects of the job: search and rescue operations and firefighter survival training.

These aren’t just skills—they’re lifesaving tactics that every firefighter must master. Whether it’s locating a trapped civilian in zero visibility or finding a way out of a compromised structure, these students are learning how to stay calm, move with purpose, and make life-or-death decisions under extreme pressure.

Firefighter survival goes hand-in-hand with rescue training. Knowing how to call a mayday, navigate disorientation, and conserve air could mean the difference between going home or not. These lessons build not just competence but confidence—and most importantly, they prepare these future firefighters to protect others while also watching out for themselves and their crew.

Proud of the hard work these students are putting in and the dedication they’re showing. This is where the foundation is built, and it’s what turns rookies into reliable firefighters.

Our Community Deserves the Best — But We Need Your Help

In emergency situations, every second counts — especially when it comes to vehicle accidents and rescues. As firefighters, we train hard and stand ready 24/7 to protect lives. But without the right tools, even our best efforts can fall short.

Right now, our department is working to replace our outdated extrication equipment with up to date extrication equipment — lifesaving tools designed to safely remove victims from wrecked vehicles and other entrapments. These are the tools that make the difference between life and death when someone is trapped and time is critical.

Unfortunately, our current budget has only allowed us to raise $750, far short of the $40,000 goal needed to purchase and outfit our trucks with the gear our community truly deserves.

This isn’t just about tools — it’s about you, your family, your neighbors. When accidents happen, we want to show up ready — not scrambling to make do with outdated or inadequate equipment.

If you’re able to give, share, or support in any way, you’re helping us serve you better. You’re helping us save lives.

Let’s come together to make this happen. For our community. For safety. For the people we care about most.

Today, company officers gathered some of the firefighters who were learning to operate the pump around the engine. They walked them through the controls, explaining how pressure, flow rates, and friction loss all played a role in getting water to the nozzle efficiently. They emphasized that mastering the pump wasn’t just about pushing water—it was about understanding the needs of the crew inside and ensuring they had the right pressure to fight the fire safely.

“A bad pump operator can make or break a scene,” one officer warned. “The pump operator is the most important job on the fireground.”

As the firefighters operated the pump, the officers stressed that muscle memory and quick thinking could mean the difference between success and failure on the fireground. While we all love truck work, the reality is that the engine company is the heart and soul of the fire service. taken in Moneta, Virginia by @moneta_fire

Firefighter One students spent the last week learning about fire extinguishers and forcible entry. As part of their basic firefighting education, they received hands-on training in fire extinguisher use. They learned about different types of extinguishers, including water, dry chemical, and CO₂, and how each is used for specific fire classes. Instructors emphasized the PASS method—Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep—to ensure students could effectively operate an extinguisher under pressure. Practical exercises allowed them to apply their knowledge by extinguishing controlled fires, building confidence and reinforcing the importance of quick, accurate decision-making in fire suppression.

Students were also trained in forcible entry techniques to ensure they could quickly and safely gain access to buildings during emergencies. They learned to use tools like the halligan, axe, and other specialty tools to force open doors, windows, and other barriers while minimizing damage when possible. Instructors taught them to assess different entry points and choose the most effective method based on building construction and security features. Hands-on training allowed students to practice striking, prying, and cutting techniques, building the strength, skill, and confidence needed to perform forcible entry under high-pressure conditions. taken in Moneta, Virginia by @moneta_fire

Today, Firefighter I students are learning about ropes and knots, which develop essential skills for rescue operations, hoisting tools, and securing equipment. They study different types of ropes, such as life safety and utility ropes, gaining an understanding of their construction, maintenance, and inspection to ensure reliability. Hands-on training focuses on tying essential knots like the clove hitch, the figure-eight family, and the bowline, each serving specific functions in firefighting scenarios. Mastering these techniques allows firefighters to safely secure ladders, hoist tools, and perform rescues with confidence. Proper knowledge of ropes and knots is a fundamental part of their training, reinforcing safety and efficiency in the field. taken in Moneta, Virginia by @moneta_fire
