The pond keeps the last of the light. Daubigny belonged to the Barbizon school and had worked outdoors since 1843; his studio boat, the Botin, took him along the Seine and the Oise. The canvas reached the Met in 1900. How much of Monet's boat began here?

A red coat with gold at the shoulder. Pechell was born in 1724 in County Kildare, into a Huguenot family: his grandfather had left France after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. It came to the Met in 1990, a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Payne Bingham Jr.

The story of the first known Black painter recognized as a professional in the United States.
Joshua Johnson apprenticed as a blacksmith before he was freed around 1782. In 1816 the Baltimore city directory listed him as a "free householder of Colour". A newspaper advertisement called him "self-taught", and his patrons came from the city's artisan and middle-class families. He portrayed Elizabeth Beatty and her daughter Susan around 1805; the double portrait is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Why do you think he so often gave his sitters a strawberry?

How a monkey named Husaini ended up with a portrait of his own.
The inscription on the back, written in Devanagari, says Husaini "comes from" Nawab Davad or Daud Khan. That most likely means Daud Khan Panni, a faujdar, a military commander and territorial administrator, who served the Mughal emperors from Aurangzeb to Farrukhsiyar. The portrait is dated 1705/10. About forty-six works are now attributed to the Stipple Master and his patron, Maharana Amar Singh II, who together began a new style in Mewar.
If your pet had a portrait, what would the inscription on the back say?

What art students had to master before they could draw a living model.
Charles Courtney Curran (1861–1942) painted this alcove in 1888 at the Art Students League of New York, where he studied and later taught. Before the life class, students drew casts of Greek and Roman sculpture and copies of Renaissance works such as Michelangelo's Night. The League has never offered degrees or grades, yet many important artists studied or taught there. The work belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Which sculpture would you want to practice on?

How a painted dollar bill made the Secret Service nervous.
Victor Dubreuil, born in France in 1842, made his name in New York with pictures of money: some crowded compositions, others as restrained as this single bill. Trompe l'oeil means fool the eye, and at a time of widespread counterfeiting his currency looked convincing enough to worry government officials. This One Dollar Silver Certificate, painted between 1898 and 1900, belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
Would you frame a bill like this, or try to spend it?
