Part 2, because the last one clearly hit a nerve πŸ‘€

The airport is where every generation's entire financial personality reveals itself. Same terminal, same delayed flight, four completely different relationships with money:

Boomers: Paid cash. Asked what a "point" is. Genuinely confused about why you'd make it complicated β€” and has never once thought twice about a checked bag fee.

Gen X: One airline card since 1998. Loyal to a fault. Sitting on 400,000 miles they will never, ever redeem because they're "saving them for something big." The something big is not coming.

Millennials: Opened 4 cards in 90 days for the bonuses. Flew lie-flat to Tokyo for $11 in taxes. Has a spreadsheet with annual fee due dates, a calendar reminder for the 5/24 rule, and a separate email account just for travel. Downgraded nothing, upgraded everything, and will explain transfer partners to you at dinner completely unprompted.

Gen Z: Klarna'd the whole trip. Owes $340 in 4 installments. No card, no points, no plan β€” but somehow already at the gate, boarding before the rest of us.

Okay, be honest:
- Which one is actually your generation?
- Who do you know that's secretly acting like a different one? (We all have a Gen X parent sitting on a mountain of miles they'll never touch.)
- What did I miss?

Drop it in the comments and follow for Part 3 πŸ‘‡

Why I'm renewing the Amex Platinum at $895/yr πŸ’³

The credits, added up:

Hotel credit β€” $600
Resy dining β€” $400
Airline fee β€” $200
Uber Cash β€” $200
Digital entertainment β€” $240
Walmart+ β€” $155
Saks β€” $100
CLEAR Plus β€” $209
Oura Ring β€” $200
lululemon β€” $300
Prepaid hotel β€” $300
Global Entry/PreCheck β€” $120
Priority Pass β€” $469

Total: $3,493 in credits on an $895 card.

Now the part the math doesn't show: nobody actually nets $3,493. These are use-it-or-lose-it credits, most of them split into monthly and semiannual chunks, and a lot of them only pay off if you were already going to spend there. A $300 lululemon credit isn't worth $300 unless you were buying lululemon anyway.

Here's the real test: add up only the credits you'd use at full price without changing your behavior. If that number clears $895, the card's a keeper. If you're reaching to justify the Saks credit, it isn't.

For me it clears easily β€” the hotel, airline, Resy, and Priority Pass credits alone cover the fee. Everything after that is upside.

Which bracket are you in β€” easy keep, or a coupon book you'll never touch? πŸ‘‡

Follow @moneyandpoints for the card math nobody runs honestly.

Another Hyatt Transfer Gets Nerfed πŸͺ¦

Bilt is moving Hyatt transfers from 1:1 to 4:3 starting Fri, 1/1. You'll need 33% more Bilt points for the same Hyatt award. A 60K-point Hyatt stay now costs 80K Bilt points.

No carve-out. It hits every Bilt member, Palladium included. As a Palladium holder, this one stings.

The new math on Palladium:
- Up to 3x on everything with Points Accelerator = 2.25 Hyatt points per dollar
- Still solid. Just not the cheat code it was.

This has been Hyatt's year of cuts:
- Chase moved Sapphire Preferred Hyatt transfers to 4:3
- Hyatt's award chart went from 3 pricing tiers to 5
- Hyatt wants credit card revenue to grow from $50M in 2025 to $105M in 2027
- A new premium Hyatt card with Chase is expected

Connect the dots: Hyatt wants you earning on its own card, not feeding points in from Bilt and Chase.

Where 1:1 still lives:
- Bilt, through Thu, 12/31
- Chase Sapphire Reserve + Sapphire Reserve for Business

My take: if you have a Hyatt stay planned for 2027, move the points before Thu, 12/31. If you don't, hold. Transfers are one-way and Hyatt's pricing is still moving.

Follow so you hear about the next one before it hits.

Bilt Rent Day is Thu, 10/1 and the Hilton bonus looks massive on paper. Up to 200%.

But Bilt β†’ Hilton is 1:1, not 1:2. So even Platinum's 175% gets you 2.75 Hilton points per Bilt point. Hilton points are worth ~0.4–0.5Β’, so that's ~1.1–1.4Β’ per Bilt point. Hyatt at 1:1 usually beats that.

The real play is the status. Transfer the minimum (1,000 pts, or 2,000 if you're Blue) and you get instant Hilton status through 12/31/26:

- Platinum β†’ Diamond
- Gold β†’ Gold
- Silver β†’ Silver
- Blue β†’ Silver

Want to keep it? Gold and Platinum: stay 12 nights by 12/31 and you get Diamond through 3/31/28. Blue and Silver: 6 nights gets you Gold through 3/31/28.

Diamond gets you executive lounge access, space-available suite upgrades, a daily food & beverage credit at US hotels, and 100% bonus points on stays.

Skip the $200 Bilt Cash upgrade to 200%. Even on the max 100K transfer it's only +25K Hilton points, about $100–125 in value.

Also live Thu, 10/1: up to 125% bonus to Amtrak. Platinum gets 100%, which turns the normal 2:1 rate into 1:1.

Window is 12am ET to 11:59pm PT on Thu, 10/1 only. Save this and follow for every Rent Day breakdown.

Being an adult is so expensive 😭

Remember when hanging out meant splitting a boba and walking around the mall for 3 hours?

Now it's flights, hotels, a dog-sitter, someone to watch the kids, and a group chat that's been "planning" for 8 months.

The friendships didn't get more expensive. The logistics did.

Still worth it though. Every single time.

Send this to the friend you'd fly across the world just to eat dinner with 🫢

Bilt just added Amtrak as a transfer partner. It's their 26th partner and the first train partner, live since Wed, 9/23.

Here's the math before you move a single point.

The ratio is 2:1. Every 1,000 Bilt points becomes 500 Amtrak points. Transfers are instant and go in 1,000-point increments.

Amtrak has no award chart. Point prices track cash fares, so you get roughly 2.6Β’ per Amtrak point. At 2:1, that's about 1.3Β’ per Bilt point. TPG values Bilt points at 2.2Β’, so 1,000 Bilt points worth ~$22 turn into ~$13 of train travel.

What real trips cost in Bilt points:
- NYC β†’ DC coach ($25): 2K
- NYC β†’ DC business ($258): 20K
- Seattle β†’ Chicago private room on the Empire Builder ($715): 54K

The verdict: this beats burning points on rent, but it loses to Hyatt, Atmos and Aeroplan every time.

Where it makes sense: you ride the Northeast Corridor (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston) a lot, you need to top off for one specific booking, or you were about to cash out Bilt points for something worse anyway.

One trap: Amtrak points expire after 24 months with no activity. Never transfer speculatively. Find the train, then move the points.

This is also the first time a major bank points program has partnered with Amtrak since Chase dropped it in 2015.

Follow for more points math before you transfer.

8 travel tips that actually save money, with the data behind each one πŸ‘‡

1. Fly Tuesday, not Sunday. Domestic Tuesday departures average 14% less than Sunday (Expedia 2026 Air Hacks).

2. Book domestic flights ~39 days out, international 49+ days out. That's where Google Flights data shows the lowest average fares. Domestic sweet spot range: 23–51 days.

3. Hotels work the opposite way. Hotels.com's 2026 Hotel Price Index found booking 8–14 days out ran 23% cheaper than booking 4+ months ahead. For holidays and big events, book early on a free-cancellation rate and rebook if it drops.

4. Abroad, when the card terminal asks "Pay in USD?", say no. That conversion typically adds 3–7%, and ATMs can go past 12%. Pay in local currency on a no-foreign-fee card.

5. Burn points when cash fares spike. Holidays and peak summer are when each point is worth the most.

6. Travel shoulder season (Apr–May, Sep–Oct). Same places, thinner crowds, lower fares and hotel rates.

7. Restaurants: Google Maps, 4.4+ stars, 200+ reviews, then read the 3-star reviews. That's where you find what's actually wrong.

8. Do the fancy restaurant at lunch. Same kitchen, and lunch menus usually cost a fraction of dinner.

Which ones am I missing? Drop yours below, the best ones go in part 2.

The Amex Platinum costs $895 a year. Five cards want the crown, and most of them cost half as much πŸ‘‘

What each one actually gets you:

- Venture X ($395): $300 Capital One Travel credit + 10K anniversary miles (~$100). That's ~$400 back on a $395 fee. Capital One Lounges + Priority Pass included.

- Atmos Summit ($395): 25K-point Global Companion Award every year, usable in any cabin. 3x on dining and all foreign spend, 8 Alaska Lounge passes a year, free checked bag for you + up to 6 on your booking.

- Bilt Palladium ($495): 2x on everything, up to 1.25x on rent/mortgage with no fee, $400 hotel credit ($200 every 6 months, 2-night min via Bilt Travel), $200 Bilt Cash yearly, Priority Pass + 2 guests.

- Citi Strata Elite ($595): 12x on hotels, cars and attractions via Citi Travel, 6x on flights via Citi Travel, 6x dining Fri/Sat 6pm–6am ET, 4 Admirals Club passes a year, $300 hotel credit.

- Sapphire Reserve ($795): 8x on Chase Travel, Sapphire Lounges + 2 guests, and Hyatt transfers stay 1:1 (Preferred dropped to 4:3).

The cheat sheet:
- Want the fee to pay for itself with zero effort β†’ Venture X
- Fly Alaska/Hawaiian or spend a lot abroad β†’ Atmos Summit
- Pay rent or a mortgage β†’ Bilt Palladium
- Book hotels and eat out on weekends β†’ Strata Elite
- Hyatt loyalist β†’ Sapphire Reserve

Which one's your pick? Drop it below πŸ‘‡

$228 in Amex Platinum credits expire Wed, 9/30. Here's what's on the line πŸ‘‡

Quarterly (Jul–Sep):
- Resy $100: Pay with your Plat at any eligible Resy restaurant. No reservation needed, and it can split across multiple meals
- lululemon $75: US stores + lululemon.com, no outlets. In-store gift cards have worked

Monthly (September):
- Digital entertainment $25: Disney+, Hulu, ESPN, Paramount+, Peacock, NYT, WSJ, YouTube Premium, YouTube TV. Pay the provider directly, not through Apple or Google
- Uber Cash $15: Rides or Uber Eats. Doesn't roll over
- Walmart+ $12.95 + tax: Monthly plan only, not annual

Resy, lululemon and digital entertainment need enrollment in the Amex app before you buy. Purchases made before you enroll don't count.

Saks is gone as of 7/1, so don't go looking for it.

Next deadline: Thu, 12/31. The second $300 hotel credit (Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection, prepaid through Amex Travel) expires, plus every calendar-year credit: airline fee, CLEAR+, Equinox, Oura, Uber One.

Follow so you don't miss that list.

Which credit is your favorite? πŸ‘‡

4x isn't always 4x 🍽️ Here's what your dining card actually pays back.

Payback = points per dollar Γ— what those points are worth (TPG valuations). That's the number that matters, not the multiplier on the card art.

The top 3:
- Bilt Obsidian: 4x = 8.8%. Catch: base is 3x (6.6%). The 4th point comes from Point Accelerator. $200 in Bilt Cash unlocks +1x on $5K of spend, up to 5 times a year
- Amex Gold: 4x = 8.0% on up to $50K/yr at restaurants worldwide. Plus a $120 dining credit and $100 Resy credit if you actually use them
- Chase Sapphire Reserve + Preferred: tied at 3x = 6.15%. Preferred gets you the same rate for $95 instead of $795

The sleepers:
- Citi Strata Elite: 3x normally, but 6x on Citi Nights (Fri + Sat, 6pm–6am ET). That's 11.4% on weekend dinners
- Amex Green: 3x = 6.0% for a $150 fee
- Capital One Savor: 3% cash back, $0 fee. Only hits 5.55% if you convert it to Venture X miles

If you want zero fees and zero effort, Savor is still the floor.

If you want a card that earns you airline status on top of points, Atmos Summit is the only card on the list that does that.

Save this for your next dinner and send it to whoever always grabs the check.

Follow @moneyandpoints for more card math. I run the numbers so you don't have to.

Japan business class for ~43K Citi points πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅

Citi just added Japan Airlines as a 1:1 transfer partner, and they're launching it with a 30% bonus through Sat, 10/24. That means 1,000 Citi points = 1,300 JAL miles.

The math: JAL charges 55K miles for lie-flat business class to Tokyo (~$350 in taxes). With the bonus, that's ~43K Citi points for a 13-hour flight in one of the best business cabins flying.

1:1 cards: Strata Elite, Strata Premier. No-fee cards like Double Cash and Custom Cash transfer at 1:0.7 (1:0.91 with the bonus).

The part most people miss: new JAL accounts can't book awards for 60 days. Open your account today, even if you're not ready to transfer.

JAL miles expire 36 months after they hit your account, so find the flight before you move points.

Best award space: when the schedule opens ~360 days out, off-peak winter, or July–August.

Follow for every transfer bonus worth taking. Send this to whoever you're going to Japan with.

The world's best airlines of 2026 just dropped, and the best US airline came in at #25. πŸ’€

Skytrax announced the rankings Fri, 9/18 in London. Singapore Airlines took back the crown for the 6th time. Qatar, a 9-time champ, slid to #2. Cathay, ANA and Turkish round out the top 5.

Delta was the highest US carrier at #25. United was #45. That's it for the US in the top 50. Delta even lost "Best Airline in North America" to Air Canada this year.

The good news: you can fly almost every airline on this list with points instead of cash.

- Singapore β†’ KrisFlyer
- Qatar β†’ Avios
- Cathay β†’ Alaska Atmos or Asia Miles
- ANA β†’ Virgin Atlantic
- Turkish β†’ Miles&Smiles
- Emirates β†’ Skywards
- Air France β†’ Flying Blue
- Hainan β†’ Fortune Wings Club
- JAL β†’ Alaska Atmos
- Korean Air β†’ book through Flying Blue

Most of those take transfers from Amex, Chase, Citi, Capital One or Bilt. Korean's own program, SKYPASS, doesn't take any card transfers, so Flying Blue is the easier way in.

Qatar also won best business class for the 13th time. Singapore won best economy. Cathay won best crew. STARLUX won cleanest cabin.

Which one's on your bucket list? Follow for the points moves behind every ranking.
