Monfreaq

As a lady with a penchant for all things strange myself, I take the word “freak” seriously.

Growing up, we avoided anything that might get the name thrown at us. Nowadays, the accusation has become an aspiration. Freaks everywhere. Self-appointed, mostly.

Staying until lights on does not make you a freak. Smoking the mystery roll does not make you a freak. Wetting your pants in the line for the bathroom does not make you a freak; happy hour at The Ev will do it.

So when somebody decides to put it in their professional name, naturally I have questions.

Jungle, electro, techno, dubstep, breaks. Screw the label. The important stuff tends to happen down low anyways. Full basslines, broken drums, plenty of room for the hips to get nasty. Knees bent, tail feather out, face screwed up. The best dancer in the room is rarely the one doing it right; it’s the one you couldn’t imagine dancing any other way.

That, to me, is where the freak lives. Not in trying to look strange, but in forgetting there was ever a correct way to do it. Monfreaq encourages this lapse in manners. Whatever good behaviour you arrived with will rarely survive her groove.

And having your own taste doesn’t mean pretending you invented it. On her monthly Skylab Radio show, FURIOSITY, Monfreaq has spent years pointing people towards other selectors worth hearing. Freak recognises freak.

There are few things cooler than watching somebody get away with being exactly themselves.

I remain protective of the term, and I like the goddam Q.

Sincerely and strangely,
Elton

BASK is just two sleeps away! And if there is one artist that can shake off the autumn chill, it’s @monfreaq . A music provocateur of sorts, and known to get down and freaky with the beat, Monfreaq always leaves you bracing for more. Her bass heavy sounds cast a watchful eye over the d floor to ensure all are basking in the ecstasy. Join us with Monfreaq to get down and defrosted at @_milneys_ Upstairs.
