One of the best things about being on Lake Eden at the Black Mountain College residency @bmcmuseum was the visual and audio peace of nature there. Very inspiring and beautiful. Esp the springtime flowers and butterflies 🦋✨ by @monicatronica

We are thrilled to share a series of reels spotlighting our Spring 2026 Active Archive artist residents! BA Thomas, Yanira Vissepó, and Monica Lopez De Victoria were in residence for ten days at the historic Lake Eden campus of Black Mountain College, where they had studio space to experiment with materials, methods, movement, and more. These videos give a behind-the-scenes window into their time as Active Archive residents. We hope you are inspired to learn more about these incredible artists!Monica Lopez De Victoria is a Puerto Rican & Swedish American native of Miami. She is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, artistic swimmer/ choreographer, and collaborator in the experimental sibling duo TM Sisters. Monica creates large-scale, sitespecific optical art installations using video projection mapping, multi-media aquatic performances, sculptural textiles, and interactive digital XR. She looks at the internal geometry of the mind and heart, the intellect and emotion through the lens of her mixed cultural background.The BMC Active Archive Residency, a partnership between Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and Camp Rockmont, is a unique program that invites artists to develop work inspired by the history and philosophy of Black Mountain College. The residency takes place at the historic site of the College, aiming to recreate the dynamic and creative atmosphere that made BMC a powerful incubator for new ideas. Throughout the residency artists have access to BMCM+AC’s extensive collection of archival materials related to the history of the College, available for research and inspiration. @ba__thomas caught me holding the sun in my projection mapped video installation. The piece architecturally fit onto the fireplace in the Quiet House where I had my studio during my artist residency with Black Mountain College Museum’s Active Archive @bmcmuseum I hadn’t realized the heaviness and the reason why this space was built by Alex Reed at the college. But I felt it. It was a place built for solitude and sadness after a tragic death on the campus. I felt it and knew I was supposed create there. The Quiet House scared me, but facing the silence helped heal some of my deeper sadness layers. Spent time this April as an artist-in-residence with the Active Archive at the Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center!!!! Wowie thank you @brook_dorsch for the connection with the amazing team at @bmcmuseum !!! Very inspiring! I still have so much to process.Creators at Black Mountain College imagined art as something inseparable from living… thinking, walking, building, cooking, partying, collaborating, observing, etc . This residency was an important next historical step for me after my residency at @bauhaus_dessau_foundation . Grateful for the mountains, the conversations, the stillness, the time to read/research, and the reminder that nature remains one of the greatest collaborators an artist can have.…even though it was super fun collaborating with fellow AIRs @yaniravissepo @ba__thomas 🥰 great artists and humans!! #blackmountaincollege #bauhaus #northcarolina #artresearch #miamiartist by @monicatronica

We're excited to introduce the first of three artists from the Spring cohort of BMC Active Archive Residents! Meet Monica Lopez De Victoria 👋⁠⁠Monica Lopez De Victoria (b. 1980) is a Puerto Rican & Swedish American native of Miami. She is a multidisciplinary artist, educator, artistic swimmer/ choreographer, and collaborator in the experimental sibling duo TM Sisters. Monica creates large-scale, site-specific optical art installations using video projection mapping, multi-media aquatic performances, sculptural textiles, and interactive digital XR. She looks at the internal geometry of the mind and heart, the intellect and emotion through the lens of her mixed cultural background. Lopez De Victoria is investigating the rippling movements of emotional volume and supernatural illusions around us. She sees the geometry of relationships, visualizing the complex, beautiful, and unseen connections around us. Like water waves, people make interference patterns that she is hypnotized by. While in residence at the Bauhaus in 2018, she was deeply impacted by Oskar Schlemmer's theories about emotional space, movement, and the body. These ideas and the aesthetics of Art Deco, sea-level rise, pastels, tropical depression, digital sunset smears, and escapist Miami mashups have influenced her life and work. ⁠⁠The BMC Active Archive Residency, a partnership between Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and Camp Rockmont, is a unique program that invites artists to develop work inspired by the history and philosophy of Black Mountain College.
