27,307 in October.

That number seems impossible considering the kids were home for Fall break this week. And it's not like we stayed home the whole time.

We spent Monday afternoon at Elitch's, flu shots on Tuesday, Nick's Garden on Wednesday afternoon, and spent some time at the mall today. That doesn't even include me going to the Avalanche game on Wednesday night.

I look at that busy ass week and have no idea where 14,000 words came from. But they're on the page, and I'm on target to finish writing Dead Man Running on November 2nd.

Now that I'm in the second half of the story, the action is really cranked up another level. Maybe that's why the words are flowing much smoother.

Now it's time to log off and enjoy the weekend ahead. To start it off, Natasha is taking me to see Craig Robinson at a standup comedy show tonight!

Ten years ago today, I published my first book, kickstarting my author journey and throwing my life into the whirlwind of the publishing world.
It's hard for me to believe an entire decade has passed. It certainly doesn't feel like it's been that long. I suppose time becomes a blur when you're dedicating every waking moment to chasing a dream.

Going in, I had no idea what awaited ten years down the road. Taking this journey has brought a new circle of lifelong friends into my life. Incredible people I would have never met otherwise. This is an astoundingly lonely line of work. But us writers need to get lost in our own minds. This isn’t a team sport for that very reason. But that doesn’t mean you can’t develop friendships with others on the same journey. You need to, in fact, because no one else can relate to the experience.

Most importantly, this past decade has taught me so much about myself. Twenty-nine books and over 2,000,000 words written was no easy feat.
I've learned that persistence is more than a word. It's a state of mind reserved for those just crazy enough to pursue it. Having a competitive spirit has also carried me more than I realized.

You need a “refuse to lose” approach to succeed in this career. And there is a lot more losing than winning, especially in the early years.

I've lost count of how many times I was on the verge of quitting. It takes a toll, putting out book after book, believing “this will be the one that changes everything” only to find the opposite to be true.

Fortunately, I'm a Mariners fan, so self-torture and delusion are part of the package I'm used to. “There’s always next year” is just a way of life. But I’ve learned a single book is never what moves the needle. Consistency does. Consistency in both creating and building a following.

The biggest mistake a newer author can make is believing that they should only write when they feel inspired. I’m not sure a book can actually be written if that were the case. Life is too busy and full of mental clutter to allow for true creative inspiration. Instead, I’ve found that once I start writing is when the inspiration comes. Even on the days I don’t really feel like it.

13,038 in October.

The week following a conference has historically gone one of two ways for me. I'm either completely wiped out and struggle to think straight. Or I'm completely motivated and fired up and attack the week with a vengeance.

This week was definitely the latter. Sure, it helps having a looming deadline, but that doesn't always make the words flow any easier. A 12k week is easily my biggest in quite some time, and no part of it ever felt like a struggle.

I've now reached the midpoint on Dead Man's List, and the second half of a book is where I usually can power through even more. Something about seeing that finish line. Plus, I know a week in Vegas will be my ultimate reward for finishing!

The weekend will be busy, and the kids are officially on fall break. That will present its own set of challenges for next week, but I'm already planning ahead.

For now, my brain needs a couple of days away to recharge before tackling next week. Got some soccer games, a reunion with my baseball team, and my Bulls are in town to face the Nuggets for a pre-season game. Plenty on the docket, but all fun!

Spent the day as a chaperone for Selena's class field trip to the Denver Botanic Gardens.

Chasing seven 2nd graders around for five hours in the sun has me completely wiped out! But I'm glad I was able to go. A kid even called me "cool" and I'll certainly take what I can get 🤣 taken in Denver Botanic Gardens by @monito0408
