Before I became a purveyor of curiosities, I was an enthusiastic collector of all things punk rock, so imagine my surprise when those two worlds collided and I spotted this old sticker — from local Ipswich legends and the first band I ever saw live — discarded in the hedge of my local auction house.

Dating from 1981, I can’t imagine there are many of these left now. I even remember having one on my bedroom wall when I was 15! Another reminder that the antique world is all about finding these little pieces of social history, even when the value is purely nostalgic!

Early Droog Army was on full display at this Adicts gig, and I remember being particularly impressed with the number of guys who took the time to dress the part. The bowler count was magnificent.

Monkey stands front and center with drummer Kid Dee and guitarist Pete Dee just to his left (camera right). Not sure where bassist Mel Ellis got off to, but I suppose the wall to wall Clockwork collective is a small consolation.

I don’t recall the venue, but I do recall that I took great pains to gather anyone sporting Droog regalia.

Though a few personnel changes have taken place along the way, these Ipswich lads have been playing on and off since 1977, which I think is very cool.

Monkey from The Adicts recently posted a few old flyers featuring this image so I thought I’d post, too, as it’s one of my very favorites.

Generous to any photographer, Monkey has long been a favorite subject of mine, and I feel lucky he and the band were so kind to me when I was a teenager. I must have shot them at least 10 different times. Maybe more.

Alison Braun recently posted a wonderful photo that she captured right before I took this one, and it’s amazing how just one or two seconds can entirely change a composition. And add to a story.

My forthcoming book - Shot as a Teen - features 10 pages of Adicts images, including this one. I’ve lately been restoring a number of unseen images from my huge collection of early Adicts photos, so I’m looking forward to sharing them with everyone.

A rare early color photo of Monkey from The Adicts during a late-1983 video shoot whose output never saw the light of day.

I was happy to tag along and spend the afternoon shooting the band as they were filmed, but I didn’t recall taking color photos at all. I recently found these slides shoved into a poorly organized box of random stuff that had nothing to do with photography, and I was truly surprised to open the box and find color photos of the Adicts staring back at me.

I did make color photocopies from slides at the time but I guess these photos just got shoved to the back in favor of the many rolls of Tri-X B&W film that I also shot that day.

It’s a fun find so I hope you and the band enjoy.
