York House

Nearing completion, the scaffold has come down at York House, revealing the building’s dark, charcoal-hued concrete structure, defined by vertically ribbed columns and spandrels alongside smooth, curved intermediate elements.

The tinted ribbed pattern creates a direct connection to place through tone and texture, registering the site’s volcanic geological context within the material fabric of the building.

We look forward to sharing more of York House soon.

The low, monolithic form is shaped by wind, sand, and horizon, carefully embedded within the dune landscape. The architecture emerges through iteration, balancing craft and precision to create a calm, grounded retreat.

Nestled into the headland, the Ngaio Bay House is conceived as a collection of buildings arranged around a sheltered courtyard, a response to the changeable coastal climate. Locally sourced sandstone walls emerge from the landscape, grounding the dwelling within its setting, while a curving timber-clad roof follows the natural contours of the land, sheltering the main living spaces and framing ocean views.

Ngaio Bay

Situated on a headland overlooking Tasman Bay, the house is composed as an assemblage of pavilions arranged around a sheltered central courtyard.

We are pleased this project has been recognised with a Nelson & Marlborough NZIA Award.

Clad in textured limestone brick and rendered concrete, the palette shifts from a tactile exterior to a soft, refined interior of natural stones and timber.

The design concept was explored through watercolour sketches and physical models, testing ideas through hand and eye before they are resolved in plan and section.

Conceived as a coastal threshold on Te Arai’s dunes, Ember mediates between forest and sea, and provides layers of openness and refuge.

Five bedrooms and shared spaces sit beneath a hovering roof, while courtyards and glazed edges invite quiet moments of reflection and warmth beside a fire.
