We lost one of our last connections to the source last week with the passing of Sonny Rollins. When I was a teenager I had a CD of Saxophone colossus in my 89 Dodge shadow that I must have listened to a thousand times on my drive to and from my job at Tim Horton’s (more on that another time). I actually got to hear Sonny play live once in Victoria in 2006ish when I was on my first jazz festival tour with Dione Taylor, and I met Bob Cranshaw the next morning in our hotel and probably said something foolish despite his grace and kindness. Anyway, here’s me trying to play one of the hardest songs I know, because nobody can make it sound as funky as Sonny did. Long live the king.

Ps: no AI was used in this video. I’m just playing a plywood bass with a 30 year old Dr. Beat metronome standing in the corner of my basement studio recording with an iPhone mic.

For those who follow:
I took my plywood Shen bass to luthier Phil Davis in Toronto (easily accessible from Greenwood station) to have him fine tune the scoop on my fingerboard and I have to say he does great work. This is me playing said bass in between students yesterday while extensive construction was going on both inside and outside. Also, you ever check out the tune Autumn Leaves? Summer ‘26 so far…
Lots of electric bass and theatre / recording this year, and that’s fine by me. I bought a nice early 70’s Greco and had my old Eastman cleaned up to make it look somewhat respectable.
Currently playing bass in The Outsiders over at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto, where I get to squeeze a couple of pretty notes out on the fretless. Fun times… by @monnyjah

Haven’t played upright for 6 weeks so I did what any reasonable person would do - put a set of steel strings on the plywood bass, tuned it up and tried to play through a song I don’t really know and recorded it to see if the G string is really as bad as everyone says it is. I kind of like it. by @monnyjah
